Deeply divided indeed. Still getting my head around it, but I'll say this: a lot of people in my life that I love dearly are terrified. There IS a racial component to what happened last night, be it big or small. We deny that at our peril. David Duke is thrilled. The alt right thinks this is all about them. And we have a President-elect and many people close to him that sent plenty of affirming signals their way during the campaign. I pray and choose to believe that the vast majority who voted for Trump do not share those values. But the fact is many of them saw it, didn't like it, yet voted for him anyway. A man with no impulse control who is a bully. I get the anger that fueled this. I get the feeling of being left behind. But now you know why I've been freaking out about him since nearly day one. Because I knew he could win. I didn't expect him to. But I knew he could. Our system of government is about to be tested in a way it hasn't been since the Nixon years. I hope we are up to it. |
