I was bartending at the North Carolina Sports Bar at the time (I had interviewed for my current job a week earlier and was waiting to hear from the University) and was still in bed at about 11 AM when my mother called and said that something had happened in New York. I got out of bed and was mesmerized the rest of the day. At one time, I flipped channels on my cable and every single channel had pre-empted their normal coverage for emergency coverage. I went in to work that night but of course no one showed up. We had all the TVs on newschannels to try to get the latest news. There was a candlelight vigil at 5 PM but I can't remember if that was the same day or the next day. As I stood by the front door of the bar, I looked up and down Franklin Street and saw all the other merchants out on the sidewalk with their candles and I knew, taht wahtever came our way, that this country would be OK, because when the chips are down, we all have each other.
