...on the "birdie" thing. I tried to hold back, but there is one thing that has really bothered me about this. I don't really care about the "I know something you don't know" aspect of it. Although juvenile, it is certainly met with substantial enthusiasm here, so I suppose it's OK. Annoying, but OK. Whatever.
What bothers me is that someone is being pretty damn unethical in all this. In a circumstance like this--a failed drug test and subsequent disciplinary action--leaking news like this is a complete violation of the student's right to privacy. So, either amsterdam or amsterdam's source or amsterdam's source's source or . . . somebody is in violation of UF rules and, possibly, federal laws (i.e., Buckley). Even if the student has signed a waiver, that waiver is for UF, not some "source," to share information under controlled circumstances by specific individuals.
In my job, I have learned many, many things about UF student-athletes (and even some from other schools) that would get this board worked up into a complete frenzy. Some of those things have eventually become publiic, but most have not. And none of them has ever or will ever become public through me. I have to say to whoever took it upon himself to leak this information: Shame on you--it was wrong and you should know better. Doing something like this has significant potential to hurt our program and to hurt our student-athletes. I know we foam at the mouth for rumors around here, but there are times, especially when it involves a student-athlete's right to privacy, when we should show a little restraint, too.
