Look, I'm not going to justify the booing. Hardly.
But people who use race as the reason for why the students booed need to do a little research and stop jumping to idiotic conclusions.
So why do the students boo? It has EVERYTHING to do with a perception that Chris Leak is soft. In short, he's a wuss. At least that is what many believe. While I too have been critical of Chris' toughness in the past, I'm not willing to join this crowd.
With that said, Chris could do a lot to silence these critics. He could play tougher. For example, that one dive against UT really hurt his reputation amoung many Gators. Especially when the frosh had to be brought in to do what Chris could not...run for the first in a big game. Chris had an amazing game against UT and so many of the students who I talk to could not get over the slide. Your critics get it Chris, you don't like running. But even non-running QBs have been known to do what it takes to get the first down [i.e. Brett Favre].
The problem is that we have two superstar QBs. One is a senior and an amazing passer. The other is a young green horn who shows much in the way of promise. But one if viewed as tough and the other is viewed as soft. The students would rather see Tebow stiff arm a safety into a wall than see Chris collapse.
Of course, this is Leak's team...and it should be his team. However, it is time for Leak to show us that this IS his TEAM. Padding his passing stats is great. But the next time we NEED a first we NEED Chris to show us some toughness. That would go a LONG way towards countering boos and softening the critics.
Personally, with the notable exception of that play against UT or the interception thrown off the back foot last night, I think Leak has played much, much tougher this year. I see him trying. But he has to try harder if he wants to win the hearts of the student body.
Like it or not.
