"When Spurrier stepped down"

He said that one of the reasons was because he wanted to leave on his own terms. He felt that 11 years was long enough to coach at one school and was ready to move on to another challenge. Even though we weren't ready for him to leave -- heck, Spurrier had a job-for-life had he wanted it -- Steve knew it was time. He left while at the top of his game after another big win. His legacy was secure. He will forever be the Head Ball Coach and Gator fans can be proud of his contribution to the football program and the University. How much happier are we that Steve left HIS way and not be forced to admit that he had lost control of the program, that the game had passed him by, that he simply was too old. How satisfying is it that Steve was not forced out by alumni grumblings or scandal or player revolt, or simply the shame of putting an inferior team on the field. Thanks for coming to UF, Steve. And thanks for leaving when you knew the time was right. Not when it was too late.
