All in all, we did about as well as I honestly expected before the season...6-2 in the SEC, losses to Miami and FSU.
I just thought those losses would be to UT and UGa. And I expected FSU to have at most one loss before they played us.
This team had some adversity, but it also had some good fortune. Zook was fortunate that our players showed more class than those who play for our sister school in Tallahassee. Rex Grossman has shown me more this year than he did in his first 2 years...and I'm not talking about stats, TDs to interception ratio, etc. I'm talking about guts, honor & integrity.
This whole team, Spurrier's team, that last year was competing for a spot in the Rose Bowl, has shown a lot of heart and unity in the face of adversity. Zook deserves credit for holding this group together. And I've given it to him.
But for those who defend Zook like the knights of the Holy Grail, a question, Are you honestly happy with the direction of the program and the team thus far?
Dave Whitley is right. This team under Zook plays not to lose. I will never ever understand why Zook punted the ball with 7:30 left in the game, but then goes for it with 3 minutes left and then calls a time out with 4 seconds left.
Inexplicable. The decision to punt is particularly inexplicable when our punter averages 32 yards a punt. Gross. The net on those bad boys was probably closer to 18 yards.
Maybe some of you look forward to going back to the days of Galen Hall Ball. I sure don't.
I don't think Zook should be fired. But there's nothing wrong with identifying weaknesses in his approach and demanding that he change. How do you expect him to get better.
And if you think everything Zook does is "okey dokey", get ready for a rash of 7-4 and 6-5 seasons and looking forward to bids to the Aloha Bowl (is that even still around anymore).
Damn, got myself all worked up again....screw it.
Zook has to do better than he did this year. Period. Its why he gets paid $1.2 million dollars a year. Four more years of 8-4 is no longer acceptable at the University of Florida. If Zook, or anybody else, thinks that it is acceptable, then we should pay the guy like he coaches at a second tier football power. Period.
Let me summarize: 1.2 million dollars. You take the dough, you deal with the expectations.
Contrast $1.2 million with Mike Kruzek at UCF. He makes $160,000.00. If 8-4 or 7-5 is acceptable, maybe we can the head ball coach can get by on $250,000.00---that kind of money goes pretty fair in Gainesville.
