"What I'd Tell Rex"

Rex's assesment that the NFL probably won't expend a number one on him this year or next is probably an accurate one. The key to Rex's financial success lies in the likelihood that he actually succeeds in the NFL by becoming a perennial starter. That kind of success has eluded a number of former Gators who went early. Some have stayed an extra year and gone on to do very well in the pros like Petersen, Rhett, and Alex Brown. That kind of success Rex needs can only be enhanced by playing another year at UF. By learning how to better execute under Zaunbrecher's system, Rex will learn the kind of adaptability neccesary to his NFL success and maybe even his draft status. I'd tell Rex that the only possible downside to returning his senior season is the risk of catastrophic injury. That risk is a real but slight one which can be offset to a significant degree by taking out a big fat insurance policy which is well within his family's means. Although those kinds of catastrophic injuried do take place they are rare. That is particularly true as a quarterback who currently has slightly above average wheels to begin with. Unlike a Michael Vick type or a positional player like a running back, even a serious knee injury wouldn't devastate Rex's pro chances but could hurt his draft status slightly. A catastrophic arm injury is even less likely. Ultimately, the biggest reason to come back is because when all is said and done you only get one chance to be a senior. You only get one chance to be the big man on campus. Why rush things? Things just will never be the same in the pros. Next year's team is capable of making some lifetime memories. Maybe a Heisman. Maybe an SEC Championship. Who knows? Without Rex it will be a lot tougher. This team, his teamates really need him. Rex has a chance to stem the tide of early draft applicants. Simply by showing up for a senior season he will have helped the program deeply. As for next year's squad? The Oline will be a year older and a lot better than it was at the start of this season. The backs could be better and more explosive, and there are a stable of good receivers including Dallas Baker. Defensively, who knows? You've seen some of the scout team guys can really play. Come play another year. Be there in September to match horns with Brock Berlin. Show him and the world who the better qb is. Show the world you are more than a product of the system. Show the world that you made the right choice leaving your Indiana home to come here. Come win. Come be a champion. The overwhelming likelihood is that the money and the NFL are not going anywhere. Other guys have done it else where. Dorsey. Weinke. Stem the tide here at UF. Leave on your own terms. Leave with no possibility of future regrets or doubts. Line it up one more year!
