"A good friend called me after the Ohio St game..." |
|
...and I sorta got the bigger perspective after that call. He and I are best friends basically for the past 20+ years. He's now in Tampa but we keep up several times per week and meet up whenever it's possible. But he was never much for sports unless we were playing sports (golf, basketball, tennis, etc). I was always the nutcase because of my infatuation with the Gators. In the '80's in school I had the GatorBait suscrip which I'd wait by the mailbox for, the following of every blurb in the newpaper, and any tidbit I could find on tv or radio. It was hard back then. But I was the nut. I knew every player and every score. From his perspective I was a pshyco. Probably still am, but in a different way than you guys think, lol. I missed fun functions to watch or just hear Gator games. If a UF game was Saturday night...screw that party...I'm not going. So he calls me that day and mentions how my life must be complete now...nothing else to live for. Of course, being negative like I am, I thought he was right that I had nothing to live for but couldn't understand how my life was complete. So there was a pause while I wondered what he was saying. He had to tell me how UF had won the b-ball and f-ball championships and everything I'd ever dreamed of had come true. And yet, in my usual cynical way, I still didn't quite grasp what he had said to me till afterwards. Freekin' national champions in both sports in the same year. Good God. I'm always about the "next" thing (what have you done for me lately), but damn he was right. He called me to tell me all my dreams came true. And he was right. |
