"Gator Musings..."

Sorry but there is no way that anyone is going to convince me that Ran Carthon is the best kick returner on this year's active roster. No knock on Ran but as Clint Eastwood once said a man's got to know his limitations. Ran is a power back with good speed. He lacks the elusiveness you need to give you that game breaking ability on returns. Ran is that safe kind of return guy coaches use to return kicks because the other returners are so unreliable and fumble prone they cannot be trusted. The problem with that is that Ran did enough dumb things on returns himself that justify giving the other guys who are more likely to break a long one a chance. I can understand how the Gators struggled with their kickers. I cannot understand why we can't cover kicks or fail to return it out to at least the 20 yard line every time. Michigan is a Big Ten styled team which means they play good defense, run it more than their share and play the field position game. Another special team disaster like we saw at Florida State and the Gators could be primed for a New Year's day loss. The Gator offensive line got a lot better as the year went along including a pretty decent showing against the semis. Another solid showing against the Wolverines and I'll feel pretty good about them going into next season. Speaking of which, I like the idea of signing three juco offensive lineman. Gurerro will compete for a starting job next year at right guard, Washington will probably land on the two deep at offensive tackle where the Gators are paper thin and Starks is a senior, and Griffin adds much needed depth. Now if the Gators can only land a juco defensive tackle. The move may free up players like Bobby Williams and Bunce to go back to defensive tackle. I also really like how hard Zook has worked to fill up last year's recruiting class by taking a chance on Todd Bunce and Pierre after signing day and by likely adding 3 early juco entrants to count on last year's class. These are the little "invisible" things that add up to "program building" along with a full 85 man roster. I also like the fact that regardless of what Rex decides Zook will talk to him beforehand, let him know that he's wanted here, use some of his NFL contacts to give him information along with his insights as a guy who was in the big show. Coach Spurrier took the admirable position that he would in no way interfere with those kinds of decisions. Zook walks a fine line here between putting his own interests above Rex's but I'm glad he'll have his input. Rex is simply too valuable to this program at this juncture to do otherwise. When this year's team leaders and coaches have been asked about the progress of the true freshman it is interesting that all the same names keep coming up: Dallas Baker (and all the young receivers), Taurean Charles, the McCollum twins, Ray McDonald, and Nick Brooks. It is good to see that the University of Florida is a factor in Dade county recruiting again.
