I know I haven't been around much, and I haven't posted all that much in the last few years. But I visit the VS almost daily and read and enjoy you all.
And on those occasions in the past where I did post and gave an opinion(s), I have always tried to do it with class and do it respectfully. I hope I can do that agin here and now.
Here goes........
1. Shane Edge, where have you gone????????.
The fella (punter) we have now is weak, slow, and inconsistent. Hopefully he'll improve quickly, but to date, he has been poor, as has most of our special teams play. That last kick last night was horrible, when it had to be/needed to be great!
That KO team is a real stinker at times, and tackle very poorly. But don't they "look" awesome, right before the kick, when they are hip-hoppn' all over the place, playing to the crowd? I hate that crap! Someone needs to coach them that it's more important to BE GOOD, than to LOOK GOOD.
2. That's the worst overall "team coaching" effort I've seen in Urban's 3 years here. I can live with some poor play calling by Dan (God knows I've been guilty of that on mnay an occasion). And to coach after having invasive surgery 24 hours earlier is both remarkable and questionable alike.
But I can't forgive (nor could I in myself) "disorganization on the sidelines", to where you have to waste timeouts to get the correct personel on the field. To come out of what was almost a 3 minute TV timeout, then have to burn a TO with 1 second remaining on the play clock because the incorrect personnel was on the field....well, that brings me out of my seat everytime! It looked like a "ZOOK SIDELINE" last night, and that comment is not meant to be funny! That's how you lose games in the SEC that you should have/could have won with sideline ineffieciency like that!
3. Mullens' first 3 plays last night and last 3 plays were 6 of the all-time worst to start and end a game! Does anyone out there not know that when we trade sides (motion) to the left, Tebow is going to run A-gap weak to the left?????? Going to get that poor boy killed, I tell you!
And, on 2nd and 13 on that last drive, after soft-tossing the bubble to Percy and him trying to create (Bless his heart, I'll cut him slack because he works has A$$ off on every down!) something and losing a few, we run "Slide-Option weak" INTO THE SHORT SIDE OF THE FIELD??????????????????????????? My God, Dan, what were you thinking?????????? Option into the boundary? And with Moore as your pitch-man?
4. We gave up on the run way too early, in my opinion. I agree with Meyer that we got pushed around pretty good last night on the O-line. That was the difference in the game....Auburns D-line blowing up our O-line.
But, abandoning the run that quickly sent a negative message to our kids (that our staff lacks confidence and we haven't quite found that important ingredient to any great team, MENTAL TOUGHNESS, which applies to coaching, also) and sent a positive message to Auburn's D-Coordinator (who I thought was OUTSTANDING last night!) that he could run exclusively his 42-Nickel or 42-Dime package after 1st downs, get a strong push UP the B-Gaps with his 4-technique (head-up) DT's, and if Tebow runs his QB-Iso, he's fairly contained and funneled back into the center of the field, where AU waiting.
5. Which brings me to my next issue....Cunningham and Harvey. These poor souls NEVER seem to get off the field! God Bless them! They were WARRIORS last night. But, they need to be spelled. And last night, they were over-worked, when the interior D-line seemed to be substituting often to try and remain fresh.
Where's Carlos Dunlap??????????????????? Don't give me that "he's too young" BS! He's 6' 6", 240, and athletic as hell! It's DE, for cryn' out loud! Were not asking him to play QB! Put him in a 7 -technique (outside shoulder so as not to lose contain), put him in a 3-point stance, and have him rush to the outside shoulder of the near back, (for contain) coach him to get/have his arms up, hoping to disrupt the passing lane!!!!!!! Get him on the field!!!!!!!!!!!!!! No stage is too big! Create depth and play depth. And, get Harvey and Cunningham off for a few plays.
6. Speaking of a pass-rush, here's my opinion, FWIW: Until we are able to get a strong PUSH UP THE FIELD, and not off the edge, forcing the opposing qb to have to move out of the pocket to throw, we will continue to have the same problems in the secondary as we have had the last 2 games. 91 and 49 can't be expected to get to any qb, the way opposing offenses are set up against us right now. The Ole Miss qb and Brandon Cox were well-coached to read the corners shoulders first, then "spy" (pre-snap read) the Strong and Free safety's postion relative to where they were lined up, either on or inside the hash, and throw quickly....the "quick slant" or 8-10 yard "hook". Well coached by Auburn and Ole Miss.
We rarely blitz with Doe and Spikes, and opponents know that....and use it against us.
7. We are as predictable on defense as we are on offense.....especially in the secondary. Our Cover 2 is really, really bad right now....very tentative....not aggressive. Why? I have s to assume it's because they are not allowed to be aggressive.
I ask this rhetorically: Is there anyone else out there who is sick and tired of watching our corners play "outside shoulder" technique, and continually give up the "inside" on the receivers release off the ball? I come out of my skin sometimes, watching us. And I don't blame the kids.
How many times (especially last night) have you seen us lose "defensive momentum" due to the corners getting burned on the quick-slant for crucial 1st downs? It happened 4 times last night....4 times AU had 2nd and long or 3rd and long (by my definition, 6 or more yards for the 1st down) and we give up the INSIDE to the receiever. And Cox, reading the CB's shoulders and outside position on the receiver (pre-snap), delivers a perfect quick-slant pass.
Now, we did that a bunch last year, too. But, last year we had Reggie Freaking Nelson playing "man-free" on the hash and receivers knew what was coming if/when they caught the slant. Major Wright is going to be a very, very good safety for UF, but HE IS NOT REGGIE NELSON.
Memo to Strong: Allow Coach Heater to "coach" Haden and Pierre to play their cornerback position more with an "inside" technique....let them jam and run the reciever "into" the boundary on the snap, and have the wide-side safety play outside the hash for over-the-top help. No one on Auburns receiving corp should have scared us as a deep (level 3) threat...our youngn' can run with those guys all night long! But, all AU receivers are very good level 1 and 2 receivers! By playing more inside technigue, forcing receivers with outside releases, you take away 60-70% of level 1 and level 2 routes.
8. Only 2 Zone blitzes all night? God, are we ever vanilla on defense. We sit mainly in that base 4-3, LB's 5 yards off the ball, db's in Cover 2 or a "rolling" cover 2 look, shaded to field (wide-side), then on the snap of the ball, we sit and read. Our linebackers spend more time LOOKING into the backfield instead of BEING in the backfield. It's time to turn them loose, let them show blitz and on occasion, blitz!!!!!!!!!! It creates confusion on the opposing O-line, it creates disruptions in timing, it on occasions (as we all remember) blows up an offense's rhythm.
What are we afraid of? Let great athlete's, however young, be great athletes! Playing defense is all about flying around, blowing up, having fun....and you can tell our kids are not having fun right now. Most are tentative...afraid to make a mistake...which allows for more mistakes to be made. And opposing drives to continue.
9. Once agin, no offensive holding calls on an opposing team in THE SWAMP. I swear these O-line coaches are wasting their time in college ball and are grossly underpaid, and should be in the NFL. Auburn ran their "toss" play 13 times from various formations and NOT ONCE WERE THEY CALLED FOR HOLDING! Do you guys realize how hard it is for an o-lineman to "maintain the integrity of his block" for 5-6 seconds, allowing the RB to get outside the hash and vertical down the sideline, without holding? Incredible!!!!!!! I saw Harvey's jersey almost pulled down to his knees in the 2nd quarter, and no call.
10. And wasn't it nice to see my very good friend Peter Kerasotis on the field, next to Wilbur and his 2 girls, during the "Ring of Honor"unvailing? Wilbur personally asked him to be there, stand next to him, because in Wilbur's heart, he knows that because of Peter Kerasotis taking it pubically almost immediately after the injustcice occured last fall, Wilbur is today, where he should have been one year ago. Some of you guys are pretty hard on Peter (no pun intended) when he writes concerning UF. Well, if you don't believe a thing that I have ever posted, please belive this: Peter Kerasotis is a great UF alum, passionate about his Gators, and a damn fine writer and person. I don't have very many sportswriter friends, you don't make many in coaching. But, in Peter's case, I respect him greatly.... and apparently Wilbur Marshall does also.
Best to you, all!
