Zook stepped into a very difficult situation. He has made some very serious and questionable moves/mistakes this year. He has made some moves, such as hiring coach Zaun and JT that the majority of Florida fans applauded but which have now given rise to second guessing for varying reasons. He lost some games that before the season we expected to win like Ole Miss and LSU and he lost some in embarassing fashion such as FSU and LSU. He has also manged to win some games that many had doubts the Gators could manage like UT and UGA.
But from the moment his name was mentioned as a candidate there have been Gator fans who have done all they can to undermine his position here. Before he ever coached a game fireronzook.com was up and getting hits. Another site hirestevespurrier.com is also thriving. Maybe I don't pay careful enough attention to the actions at other schools when new coaches come in but I can't imagine a more negative response from the word go than what Ron Zook received at UF. Somewhere along the line we had gone from following the University of Florida Fightin' Gators to watching the University of Spurrier Gators, now that he's gone I guess so is some of loyalty. Although from even his loss of juniors I guess in regards to the players I was taken in by an illusion that had nothing to do with reality anyway.
I don't know if Ron is the guy, I have my doubts. But I'm becoming more and more certain that he won't be able to prove it as the negativitiy within our own camp has created a self-fufilling prophecy of failure and disaster - a vicious infection that has spread through fans, boosters, players and possibly even coaches. The defections are nauseating and further reinforce my opinion that UF isn't that special to the guys I cheer for each Saturday. I do know that what was an uphill climb to begin with has now become tantamount to climbing Everest due to the lack of support, no - the actual attacks and counterproductive response he got from day one from all those who only paid lip service to "we all stick together". I fear his days are numbered and that save for an SEC championship next year he may only get two years here. While this season has been disappointing and unsatisfying the fans' reactions and abundent lack of support has been embarassing to witness. What I once thought was a special group of players with an equally special group of fans that would pull together has been revealed as nothing more than average. Perhaps we got what we deserved.
Blast away. Call me a pollyanna, ask me why it's wrong to criticize Zook, tell me again how the players have to look out for themselves, offer a grocery list of Zook's failings, compare him one more time to Spurrier. It doesn't matter as my disappointment in the fans, and now some players, far exceeds anything I've witnessed from this coaching staff.
