"Some other sports you shouldn't miss while at UF. "

Everyone knows that Gator football and basketball are top notch collegiate sports programs. They deserve all the attention that they get from Gator fans; however the school has many other fine teams that most Gator fans never take the time to see. Here are some other sports that you shouldn't miss while at UF. Gymnastics: The SEC is the premiere conference in women's gymnastics. Four schools including Florida are currently ranked in the top ten. Nine times, including last year, an SEC school has won the National Championship. The Gators are a regular participant in the NCAA Super Six (think Final Four) and finished second in the nation in 1998. The Lady Gator gymnasts might just be the best athletes on the UF campus. Their meets a great fun to watch especially when they are taking on another national power like Alabama or Georgia. Baseball: I can think of no better way to spend a Saturday afternoon in the spring than sitting in the stands of McKethan Stadium getting a tan and watching a baseball game. Sure, the sound of aluminum bats is somewhat foreign, but when you're watching a Gator home run sail out towards Stadium Road, you really don't care what it sounds like. The Gators have a strong baseball program that last year opened the season with an 11-0 record and came within two outs of going to the College World Series. South Carolina, Alabama, FSU, and Miami are all excellent teams that will be coming to Gainesville for three-game weekend series this season. Tennis: The men's tennis program is good. They are ranked fifth in the preseason polls. The women's program is a perennial power. The Lady Gators, ranked second in the preseason poll, have lost just ten times in the last four years. The have won NCAA Championship three times, are defending SEC Champions, and finished second in the NCAA Tournament last year. This year the NCAA Championships will be held at Florida's Ring Tennis Complex. It is not to be missed. Soccer: Come fall the minds of most Gator fans turn toward football. Those fans should not overlook that other football team on campus. The Lady Gator soccer team is one of only six schools to win a National Championship. That came in 1998, just the school's fourth year of fielding a team. Coach Becky Burleigh is currently rebuilding the squad. Last year's squad had just three seniors and eleven freshmen but they still nearly won the school's seventh straight SEC tournament title, losing the final to Tennessee in overtime. A great way to wrap up a Gator football weekend is by watching the Lady Gator football team on Sunday afternoon in Percy Beard Stadium. Volleyball: Easily the most consistently dominant team at The University of Florida, Mary Wise's Lady Gator Volleyball team has not lost an SEC match in five seasons and not a regular seasons conference match in eight. The Lady Gator volleyball team has been to the Final Four four times in the last seven years and has all the talent to go again next year. The matches are fast paced and lots of fun. Everyone should drop by the O-Dome on a Friday night in the fall for Gator Volleyball. Just be forewarned, you will not have a voice for Saturday's football game.
