"Signing Day Report(So Far).........."

Edited by Author at 2/6/2008 - 11:44 a.m.

First of all lets get all the bad news out of the way....LB Ramon Buchanan has decided to de-commit from UF and  signed with Miami. I think they sold him on the fact he can play SS and could be the next Sean Taylor but at UF they really liked him more at LB.

OL Ricky Barnum situation is a little more tense. The Lake Gibson coach for some reason pushed Ricky to take the Michigan trip but the only problem is Meyer and Company did not want him to take it and I believe they told him that if he went he may not have a letter of intent waiting on him come signing day.....Well he called UF's bluff and guess what there was no letter waiting for him from UF and therefore he had to sign with Michigan.

I think Meyer may also have a few choice words with Ricky's HS coach and would not surprise me to see us stop recruiting that school and really not many top prospects come from that school anyway so it only hurts them.

Now onto the good news.....Everybody else that was committed to Florida has already signed. UF could also be landing one or two more players in ATH TJ Lawrence who is announcing on ESPNU at 12:45 I believe and think he is most likely a Gator.

Another name that is hitting the board again is OT David Young from Illinois who could be in this class by the end of today. He will need a redshirt year because of knee problems. I know before the health issues came up he was going to be in this class but the coaches took a wait and see route with him and now with Barnum gone a spot has opened up for him. This is a plan A guy but with his health issues he was made into a plan B guy. If anything if all fails UF has the luxury of putting him on medical hardship meaning if he cannot come back from his injury it will not cost UF a scholarship.

I think people need to realize even with the 2 defections that this class is still a very good one and at worst is probably a top 10 class which is pretty good considering the amount of talent we have signed over the past two years and this will only add to it. Another positive to take out of today is that the '09 class will probably get moved up to 20 prospects which is good because the states of Florida and Georgia are loaded next year and we already lead for a ton of kids and this way these classes will be more balanced.

Taking 21 this year and maybe 20 next year allows us more wiggle room and will not put us in a situation we had this past year where we had to play so many freshmen because of a large senior class and not having enough upperclassmen to fill those needs. In a dream world you would like to keep the class at 22 prospects per year because that gives you the needed balance you need to field a team every year that is able to compete at a high level without having to depend on a true freshman or redshirt freshman for major playing time.
