It appears and I say appears that we are going to have an excellent recruiting year. No one can even really currently rate the class until the ink is dry on signing day. I have been through too many heart breaks to get excited until the ink is dry.
Even then, assuming the gurus rate our class as a top 5, one can never know until 2 to 3 years later. Best example our #1 class of several years ago which has largely evaporated.
Now if we do sign all of these 3,4, and 5 stars and they really perform as advertised and can stay in school and out of trouble, we will begin to see the results 2 to 3 years hence.
Zook took a lot of heat this year that IMO was undeserved. Even our beloved SOS stated that he left the cupboard "Half Bare". In trying to over achieve with the available talent, Zook sometimes took gambles that resulted in him being labled as a poor X and O coach. Until he plays with a full hand, I do not buy that.
If we do have a truly great recruiting year, followed up with another good to excellen year, then I will make a judgement two to three years from now.
One great year does not a team make. FSU and Miami are good examples of what it takes to maintain consistancy as a top 5 program. We were a good example until recruitng started to suffer. As SOS says, the 2001 team was his best at UF. He fully expected to win it all. 9 of those guys are in the NFL. And the program was left "half bare" in 2002 according to Steve. This is not appologizing for Zook, it is quoting Steve.
But even as good a coach as Steve was, he managed to loose the confernce championship with that 2002 team. Other than the 84 team, it was probably the best in Gator history. So even the mighty can fail when they should have succeded by their own admission.
So for heavens sake, let us not judge Zook until has an experienced deep squad that will allow him make rational decisons based on the talent he has. If then he cannot reach the peak by using sound or outstanding judgement, I will be the first to join the negative coalition and admit my failures in my judgements.
Having been in situations in the business world where I was attempting to meet expectations of excellence when I had inherited a sub par staff, one tends to take chances that have low odds of success that often result in you being labled a poor decision maker. It sure is much easier when you have a great staff and you can win with talent properly directed.
I suggest that the same applies to the football arena. If I were Zook's boss in the business world, I would never make a judgement based on this year. If I did, I would consider myself a poor manager who did not deserve the success I enjoyed.
