"That's the best analysis of the issue I've seen yet." |
|
CONTEXT ADDED BY ADMIN: END OF CONTEXT What Bowden, Wetherell, and many fsu fans still don't seem to get is that academic fraud is the WORST violation an institution can have. They try to belittle the issue as a "few kids cheating" or a "rogue tutor", which keeps making them look more and more foolish. Having that many kids cheat, while being assisted in their cheating by at least three university employees is simply unbelievable. The behavior itself eats at the integrity of the institution, but for the President and the best known employee of the athletic department to belittle it as an insignificant violation destroys the integrity of the institution. If I were an alum of fsu, I would be calling for the firing of both Bowden and Wetherall for devaluing my degree. As a taxpayer in Florida, I'm horrified that people who think so little of academic honesty are in positions of power at an institution of higher education in my state. Every time they open their mouths about this, they look worse and worse. They need to take their (very mild) medicine and shut up about it. I have colleagues at fsu who are mortified over this. One is even seeing it as the "last straw" in a long list of things that makes him want to find employment elsewhere. I can only imagine the effect it will have on their ability to attract other scholars there when academic integrity is seen as unimportant. It's not that the cheating happened. That was bad, but cheating happens everywhere. It's what's done to prevent cheating and what's done in response when cheating is discovered that matters. FSU has failed miserably on both counts. |
