All in all I will have spent 15 days there total (which is about all I get off in a year). The first visit was to scope out the medical needs of the place. What I decided is that I needed a Haitian doctor to go to the clinic once it was established. So we (me, my local priest friend and the Vietnamese charity that has been working with me) have been doing fundraising and have managed to locate a Haitian doctor to visit the clinic once a month or so. She currently practices in the Domincan Republic.
In the interim the convent is providing several nuns who are also nurses who will be the main backbone of the clinic. I also have a promise from some physician/priests that they will go there frequently and help the nurses/nuns out.
So, after this next visit, I will have accomplished what I set out to do and my services won't be needed, and least not primarily. I may go down once a year or so just to check it out, but I will be turning the place over to the nuns and Caritas (a Catholic International Relief agency) so that it is sustainable longterm.
