END OF CONTEXT

*note this does not include some key upsets which will be featured in another segment

1) 1996 vs fsu 52-20.  The injury riddled Gator Offensive Line was overwhelmed in the first game and gave up numerous sacks of Gator QB Danny Wuerffel.  Since that game Head Coach Steve Spurrier finally implemented the shotgun formation which gave Wuerffel an extra second or two to survey the field.  Using the new Shotgun formation and with a much healthier Offensive Line, the Gators proceeded to carve up the fsu secondary avenging their earlier 21-24 defeat in Tallahassee, humiliating the sows on national TV, and winning the first national championship in school history.

2) 2006 vs Ohio State 41-14 while grinding their way through the most grueling schedule any national championship team in the first decade of the 21st century was to face, the Gators’ were treated to a nonstop torrent of scorn and abuse from the national media which favored allowing Michigan to play Ohio State again for the national championship despite the fact that they had lost their last game against Ohio State and failed to win their conference.  In the closest vote in BCS history, the SEC Champion Gators were selected over Michigan.  Tremendously fueled by comments like “they should put troops around the field to make sure they (UF) cannot enter the stadium” (Bob Ryan), “Nobody outside of Gainesville wants to see a UF-Ohio State matchup” (Gene Wojchechowski) “Florida would lose to Rutgers” (Doug Flutie) as well as repeated disparagement from Kirk Herbstreit, Mitch Albom, Skip Bayless and many others in the media, Florida got its chance to face undefeated and “invincible” Ohio State led by Heisman Trophy Winner Troy Smith.  The Gators responded by slapping Ohio State all over the field practically from the opening gun.  The Gator Offense utilizing a ball control passing attack as well as repeated runs to the perimeter went through the Ohio State Defense like crap through a goose all night.  Meanwhile, the Gator Defense utterly dominated the Ohio State Offense all night long giving up a mere 82 yards of total Offense (a national championship game record) and sacking Troy Smith 6 times.  The pundits were right about one thing.  The game was indeed over by halftime.  The Gators already led 34-7 by that point.

3) 2008 vs Oklahoma 24-14 The 12-1 SEC Champion Gators fresh off their SEC Championship Game victory over undefeated Alabama were set to face 12-1 Big 12 Champion Oklahoma featuring Heisman Trophy Winning QB Sam Bradford and “the greatest Offense in the history of college football”.  As it turned out in the Orange Bowl, the “greatest Offense in the history of college football” managed just 14 points despite two uncharacteristic interceptions by Gator QB and former Heisman Trophy Winner Tim Tebow in the first half after the Gator Defense made two first half goal line stands.  With Tebow allowed to run more in the second half, the Gator Offense got moving and the Gators took a 17-14 lead by the middle of the 4th quarter.  Oklahoma responded by moving the ball on their next possession, but a spectacular interception by Gator Strong Safety Ahmad Black in which he literally stole the ball in midair from an Oklahoma receiver ended the threat.  The Gator Offense behind Tebow and Percy Harvin then drove down the field and punched it into the endzone on a trademark jump pass to secure the Gators’ 3rd National Championship.

 4) 1984 vs Kentucky 25-17 After blasting Georgia 27-0 the week before, the Gators were poised to win their first SEC Championship with only 7-2 Kentucky left to go.  On a bitterly cold day in Lexington, the Gators struggled to a 25-17 lead over UK (which finished the season 9-3).  Kentucky got the ball and started driving for a possible game tying score but Gator all SEC Free Safety Adrian White intercepted a pass deep in Gator territory to finally secure the Gators first SEC Championship.

5) 1991 vs Kentucky 35-26 The 8-1 Gators were vying for their second SEC Championship but needed a victory to win the title outright.  After taking what looked like a comfortable 28-12 lead early in the 4th quarter, Kentucky QB Pookie Jones got hot.  The extremely mobile Jones gave the Gator Defense fits in the 4th quarter leading Kentucky on two long touchdown marches which pulled the score to within 28-26.  The Gator Offense led by SEC Player of the Year QB Shane Mathews and star Tailback Errict Rhett then embarked on a punishing long march of its own featuring several bruising carries by Rhett who secured the victory by punching the ball into the endzone.  Unable to come up with any excuse for new rules which it could then apply retroactively, the SEC was forced to recognize this SEC Championship-UF’s second..

6) 1994 vs Alabama 24-23 In one of the greatest SEC Championship games in history, 9-1-1 faced 11-0 Alabama in Atlanta.  The two teams traded punches like a couple of heavyweights in the middle of the ring for the next three hours with Alabama taking a 23-17 lead with about 5 minutes remaining.  Then the Gator Offense using several plays from Head Coach Steve Spurrier’s bag of tricks had star QB Danny Wuerffel fake an injury so that strong armed backup QB Eric Kresser could catch Bama by surprise with a long out route.  Then the Gators utilized a receiver screen followed by a fake receiver screen and receiver pass the next play to move the ball down the field.  Danny Wuerffel then capped the drive by hitting receiver Chris Doering for the go-ahead Touchdown.  Alabama got the ball back and started driving by Gator Cornerback Fred Weary tipped a pass which Gator Safety Eddie Lake then intercepted securing the victory.

7) 2008 vs Alabama 31-20 In another of the greatest SEC Championship games ever, 11-1 Florida faced 12-0 Alabama for the SEC Title and a certain berth in the National Championship Game.  The Gators got out to a halftime lead only to see Alabama come storming back to take a 20-17 lead at the end of the 3rd Quarter.  The Gators, led by star QB Tim Tebow were not to be denied however as he led the Gator Offense on two long Touchdown drives in the 4th quarter against a very stout Alabama Defense.

8) 1996 vs Alabama 45-30 In their regular SEC Championship Game clashes, this game has been surpassed by a few others but was still an excellent contest between 11-1 Florida fresh off its bitter defeat at the hands of rival fsu the week before and 10-2 Alabama featuring the #1 ranked pass Defense in the country.  Any chance of the Gators being the least bit demoralized went out the window a couple of hours before kickoff as Texas beat Nebraska in the Big 12 Championship game thus opening the door to a rematch with fsu and a possible national championship if Ohio State could beat undefeated Arizona State in the Rose Bowl and Florida could get by Alabama in the The SEC Championship game.  Utilizing their brand new shotgun Offense, the Gators thwarted Alabama, plan to stop the Gator Offense by getting pressure on Wuerffel and given an extra second to pass, Heisman Trophy Winner Wuerffel and his excellent receiver corps were just too much for a game Alabama squad which fought until the Gators finally put he game away in the middle of the 4th quarter.

9) 2006 vs Arkansas 38-28 With an SEC and National Championship Game berth on the line in the 2006 SEC Championship Game.  The Gators featuring the SEC’s top run Defense faced Arkansas featuring the SEC’s top run Offense.  Utilizing a blocked punt and a long Touchdown pass to WR/TB Percy Harvin, the Gators took a 17-7 halftime lead as they contained Arkansas’ super Tailbacks Darren McFadden and Felix Jones.  The momentum shifted toward Arkansas in the 3rd quarter as they took a 21-17 lead.  With Florida’s Offense stalled on their own half of the field, Head Coach Urban Meyer called for a fake punt to regain momentum.  It worked but the Gator Offense then stalled again.  The momentum swung back to the Gators however as the ensuing punt was fumbled by Arkansas and recovered for a Gator Touchdown.   The Gators followed up that score with a 67 yard TD jaunt by Percy Harvin only to see the Razorbacks pull of a trick play for a TD to pull back to within 3.  The Gators responded with a trick play of their own.  QB Tim Tebow pitched the ball on a reverse to WR Andre Caldwell who then threw a Touchdown pass to TE Tate Casey.

10) 1995 Arkansas 34-3 The Gators got off to a 17-3 halftime lead shutting down Arkansas’ running game and moving the ball effectively with Wuerffel’s passing.  Arkansas threatened to try to make a game of it in the 3rd quarter and drove down near the Florida goal line when a pitchout was intercepted by Gator Linebacker Ben Hanks and returned 95 yards for a Touchdown and the Gators cruised from there.

11) 1993 Alabama 28-13.  This was the last SEC Championship Game played at “neutral” Legion Field in Birmingham Alabama where Alabama played half of its home games.  The Gators, led by QB Terry Dean were facing a characteristically tough Alabama squad with a great Defense.  After two and a half quarters the score stood at 14-13 Gators when the Gators’ Shayne Edge dropped back to punt, saw open space on the right side of the line and ran for a critical first down.  The Gators connected on a Touchdown bomb from Dean to Jack Jackson on the next play and added an insurance Touchdown in the 4th quarter.  Bama, using ace utility man David Palmer as both a receiver and a Quarterback substituting for their injured starter, was unable to mount much Offense or threaten the Gators again.

12) 2000 vs SEC Championship vs Auburn 28-6 in a rematch of a game the Gators dominated in Gainesville 38-7, the Gators, led by MVP Rex Grossman’s 4 TD passes and Tailback Earnest Graham’s 169 rushing yards the Gators once again rolled over Auburn with ease.  The Gators were up 21-0 midway through the second quarter before Auburn scored with a late field goal.  Auburn started out the scoring in the second half with another field goal to pull within 21-6 to which the Gators immediately responded with another Touchdown strike from QB Rex Grossman to WR Brian Haugabrook.

13) 1984 vs UGA 27-0 The Gators entered the contest undefeated in SEC play with an elusive SEC Championship on the line.  Florida had lost to Georgia several times in exactly this scenario and had lost 6 in a row to their hated rivals in Jacksonville.  The Gators dominated early building a 17-0 lead early in the 2nd half when Georgia started to make one of their typical 2nd half surges.  The Bulldogs drove down the field to the shadow of the Florida goal line but were stuffed on 4 successive running plays inside the 5.  Florida responded by unleashing a 96 yard Touchdown bomb from QB Kerwin Bell to WR Ricky Nattiel who was so open he started high stepping at the Georgia 30 on his way to the gameclinching score.  The Gators tacked on another field goal to complete the slaughter that day.  The Gators then defeated Kentucky the next week to record the first undefeated conference record in school history.

14) 1928 vs UGA 26-6 after a bitter 28-0 defeat the year before when Florida felt like they had a good shot to win and after dropping the first 6 contests in the series, the 1928 Gators were loaded with talent and looking for revenge against Georgia in Savannah.  Sophomore Tailback Red Bethea broke free for a 30 yard TD run in the first quarter.  Georgia countered with a 40 yard TD pass early in the second quarter but muffed the extra point.  Later in the 2nd quarter, star Gator QB Clyde “Cannonball” Crabtree scrambled for a 20 yard TD after finding nobody open and eluding four poodle would-be tacklers.  In the 3rd Quarter Gator Tailback Carl Brumbaugh completed a 50 yard halfback option pass to Gator All-American WR Dale Van Sickle for another TD.  As the 3rd quarter ended, Gator Fullback Rainey Cawthon ripped off a 35 yard run to the poodle 18.  On the next play the fully ambidextrous Cannonball Crabtree caught the poodles by surprise rolling to his left and with his left hand throwing a TD strike to Carl Brumbaugh to complete the scoring.  More than 15,000 attended the game and when some cartridges went off in the stands, the Gator fans (many said to have been fortified with then illegal alcohol), mistaking that for the game’s final gun swarmed the field to rip down the goalposts.  Police had to be called in to restore order.*

*some things never change.

15) 1995 vs UGA 52-17 With renovations to the Gator Bowl in Jacksonville, the World’s Largest Cocktail Party moved to home and home for 2 seasons for the first time in 60 years in 1994 and 1995. After winning big at the Swamp the previous season, the undefeated Gators hoped to repeat the feat at the Fabulous Poodle Palace against a struggling poodle squad led by the soon to be fired Ray Goff.  The Gators led 45-17 with 5 minutes to go in the 4th quarter when Head Ball Coach Steve Spurrier called a flea-flicker for a TD.  After the game, Spurrier admitted that he had wanted to be the first opponent to hang "half a hundred" on the Poodles in their own stadium because "we heard no one had ever done that before" The record of 52 points hung on the Poodles between the hedges still stands.
