"10 Things I Think, I Think..."

CONTEXT ADDED BY ADMIN:
END OF CONTEXT

1) I think the most glaring defeciency in UF's offense thus far is the complete lack of yards after the catch. Other than a flats dump off to Demps (basically a running play) if the pass is 13 yards, the play is usually 13 yards. So many of the routes are little square-ins and outs to the boundry followed by the receiver immediately stepping out of bounds. I really miss our receivers (and tight end Aaron Hernandez) catching the ball on stride and pinballing through the secondary for those back-breaking extra yards.

2) I think I'm ready to go on record in saying Chas Henry is the BEST punter in Florida history. Notice the wording - best. Others booted it farther (Criswell), others were more athletic (Shayne Edge), others looked like a Weeble Wobble (Hank "the Hammer" Rone) but Chas gets the job done every time. He boots it long when necessary to get out of tight spots, he boots it high when necessary to prevent long run backs, and is consistently solid downing the ball inside the 10. I can hardly think of a time when he's needlessly blasted it through the end zone for a touchback like so many other punters do.

3) I think I was extremely impressed by the Gator crowd in Knoxville Saturday. Tons of fans made the trip (95% wearing blue to stand out), lots of noise despite being at the the top of a very tall stadium, and all stayed to the end despite a long length game (I hope and trust CBS got their advertising money's worth), hot temperatures, and direct sun throughout the game.

4) I think I saw Tennessee run a play I've never seen, really can't explain, and won't ever see again. What is with a designed flea-flicker targeted to a tight end? TE Luke Stocker was the one and only Vol receiver downfield when UT ran the play. Nobody else left the line of scrimmage. Frustratingly enough, the pass was actually completed into UF's five person secondary to the only player it could have gone to.

5) I think pound for pound, Ahmad Black is the best football player for the Gators right now, and easily one of the best in the SEC. His instincts are unmatched, his effort is amazing, and his bravery taking on huge collisions despite his smaller size is inspiring.

6) I think Jeff Demps has worked really hard and received good coaching to improve his pass catching. Last year I'd cringe when we through him the ball, and I still maintain if he catches that 3rd down pass thrown to him during Florida's first drive vs. Alabama - the SEC Championship Game may have turned out much differently.

7) I think much of the reason why Florida's 1st and 2nd down offensive play-calling is pretty conservative and includes lots of runs into the teeth of the defense, is the coach's confidence in John Brantley's arm to convert long 3rd down throws.

8) I think Florida's kick-off coverage team has been just about flawless the first three games, and if that keeps up it will serve the team well going up against faster and more skilled SEC kick return men.

9) I think I've yet to see or hear a justifiable explanation why the safety was overturned when UT's QB grounded the ball in the endzone. My seats were right on the goal line, and Simms was clearly in the checker boards. Not getting those points really took away momentum.

10) I think it's often overlooked among Gator fans just how good Urban Meyer's feel for the game is, and how well he has his finger on the pulse of shifting momentum. I can't think of better evidence for this than Florida now being 8 for 8 in fake punt conversions on his watch. That's solid coaching and knowing your personnel!
