CONTEXT ADDED BY ADMIN: END OF CONTEXT Just thought I’d take a moment to wish everyone a wonderful holiday season. I haven’t posted in a while, but for no good reason, really. I last posted when I was waiting to know if my friend’s brain tumor was malignant. Well, it is, and she has not worked a day since, but has shown signs that she is defying the odds. Her treatment is going very well. Research shows that successful treatment extends a life up to two years. All signs show that she will make it past that mark. To all of us who are close to her and have been with her through the treatment so far, that is worth more than just about anything I can think of right now.
Anyway, I went through a phase of just not wanting to post anywhere except for on FB on my phone when I had a minute here and there. Then, I just got lazy. (Do you know how easy it is to sit on the couch and use a wireless mouse to read posts? It’s much harder to sit up and respond.) After that, things changed at work; I (insanely) accepted a Chair position on an interim basis that has pretty much taken up all of my time. I’m now trying to decide whether I want to take it on a permanent basis and deem myself certifiably insane.
That story reflects quite a change for me. Some of you might recall that less than two years ago a few of us were called in and told that our program was going to be cut at the university and that I had one year left. This was done out of laziness that far surpasses my not wanting to sit up and type responses to posts. We won that battle and have since grown tremendously. On top of that I am now managing a very large department, and the learning curve is quite steep. I’m figuring it out, though. I call this job punishment for spending most of my career working hard to avoid learning certain things about colleagues. Part of me wants to go back to being naïve.
Enough of that blah, blah, blah. Or, as one of my students once wrote, “blasé, blasé, blasé.” I’ll move on to something much more important—the Gators. Well, that was a painful season. It was just a speed bump, though. We are the Florida Gators and we will be back on top soon enough. It’s not like we brought back the bubble screen or asked Zook to be the house dad for a fraternity. We hired a Boom instead. Sounds good to me.
So, there you have it. Happy Holidays, Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, Happy Kwanzaa, etc. to all, and Go Gators!
P.S. Time has not changed the fact that it was a dunk. Just ask Nate Hybl.
