He was 92. His wife had a stroke 30 or so years ago. She survived but lost a lot of mental capacity. He cared for her until her death about 5 or 6 years ago. I didn't know him other than my aunt's husband. He always struck me as the kindest man I have ever known. From what I know he and his wife raised my mom for several years. My moms side of the family struggled but seemed to have a lot of brains. I think my mom was the first in the family to graduate from college. They were tough.
Anyway at the funeral today, I learned he was in WWII and was in an anti tank crew. I also learned he received the Purple Heart. If there was a picture of the one of the "Greatest Generation" he would be one of the features. I guess there are German's who have a different view of him that I do.
It was fitting he was buried on Memorial Day. I will never forget him.
