"The clear political moves..." |
Message Replied To ========== I readily admit the Republicans have proposed and done some things which seem to be much less of a priority to me, or with which I don't even agree. And to that end I would agree with you that the article is correct regarding them doing some, arguably, head-scratching things. And while what I'm about to point out is in no way a defense of THEM, there IS a concerted effort by the Obama team to gin up the idea of there existing a "war on women" by the Republicans. It is clearly being done as a political move and which is smart in political terms, but is still a political ploy done for political gain. And that certain media or web sources, in one fashion or another, tend to promote the interests (either intentionally, knowingly, or otherwise) of one of the two major parties comes as no surprise to me ..... even if a kernel of truth exists in what is being said.============================== come from the right on this, which should own responsibility for its own perception. Maybe the left has taken some advantage, but the right (like I said) needs to be held accountable. The fabricated issue on contraceptive access is a clear example of the right making a mountain out of a mole hill for political posturing. The problem for the right is that it backfired. Let's look at the situation from a different angle and maybe you can see why. The GOP had never opposed contraceptive access under W or any other political leader, but it saw a chance to make an issue out of a nonissue to hurt Obama with Catholic voters. Problem, 98% of Catholic women use contraceptives, many for medical purposes. But perhaps the bigger problem was with how the GOP made its case, it presented a panel of MEN before Congress ... men who not only did not know how contraceptives work ... but didn't even understand the basic biology. Never mind that NOBODY from the right opposed access to medical treatments that would limit reproductive technologies for MEN. And then when a woman countered their position respectfully ... the GOP was not respectful in its treatment of her. The unofficial leader of the party called her a whore and wanted to watch her have sex online ... and again demonstrated a clear lack of understanding of biology and the science of contraceptives. Instead of using the issue to distance themselves from this person, the GOP's real leaders said things like "well ... it's not how I would have said it." Look at the VS on this. "Moderates" were falling all over themselves trying to find an angle against the girl instead of addressing the substance of her testimony. The right should have taken a pass on this. Instead, it took the "typical M.O. for what is considered discourse" these days by opposing ABSOLUTELY EVERYTHING OBAMA DOES AND TRYING TO MAKE SOMETHING OUT OF NOTHING. As a result, things went south in a hurry and now you and others don't appreciate how the GOP is perceived. Well ... it's the GOP's own fault, not Obama's. Time for accountability. |
