"I had a really special Father's Day if I may share"

Edited by Author at 6/19/2012 - 11:52 p.m.

My kids are 22 and 20 (boy/girl), and both attend UCF.  Their mom and I have been divorced for 10 years now, and for many of the latter part of those 10 years, I have become "home base" for them.

Several years ago, like many others, I became a fan of the Food Network and started to step up my cooking game.  As a single Dad I really enjoyed cooking delicious meals for them and quite often for their friends.  They went away to school, and I would always get a kick out of the random call asking for a certain recipe of mine...or other times they would text me pictures of their own concoctions.

Saturday I got home from my Oasis cruise and both kids were home.  As those of you with older kids know, time spent together can be sparse.  But that being said, we spent a nice day together Saturday. They went out with friends Saturday night of course.  Then on Father's Day, we got up, my son offered to go to Starbucks and we made breakfast, sat around and laughed and talked, watched a movie on TV...and then came the really special part for me.

We all made a fantastic dinner together.  There was something so special about that I can't even explain it.  My son was making his "Red Lobster Cheddar Bisquits", my daughter and I were making mushroom risotto, asparagus, and I was grilling some beautiful ribeyes with a blue cheese crust.

Parenthood is full of such moments, but I have to say, just standing there and watching them at work, sharing a common interest that the three of us have developed together (their mom wasn't a cook), after those "detached teenage years" (some of you now what I mean) was just one of those moments this proud dad will likely not forget.
