"An essay Mason wrote dated August 17, 2010..." |
When struggling with how to write Mason's obituary, I was searching our computer when I came across several essays he had written for Mrs. Alford's Accelerated English IV class at Madison Central. I can't tell you how much of a blessing it was finding and reading these. Here is an essay dated August 17, 2010: "When I die, there would be three things I would take with me to the afterlife. Those things would be my Bible, an Ole Miss football and a basketball. These possessions are very valuable to me and serve a great purpose in my life. These items are my prized possessions. The first thing I would take would be my Bible. My Bible is a very valuable and prized possession because I am a very strong person in my faith. Since everyone struggles with hard times and awful situations, I know I can get into my Bible and read my favorite verse, Philippians 4:13 -- "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me." When I leave this earth, I want people to remember me as a person who was a great guy, but, more importantly, a strong believer. This is the most important thing I would take with me. Another valuable thing I would take would be an Ole Miss football. Ever since I was a little kid, my family and I have been getting season tickets and coming to Ole Miss football games. Ole Miss has a beautiful campus and I love going up there almost every Saturday to watch the Rebels play football. I just have a passion for Ole Miss and the football games. I have been going to Ole Miss football games ever since I have worn diapers. These are just a few of the reasons why I will take this with me when I am buried. My third and final possession I will take with me when I am buried will be a basketball. I have been in love with the game of basketball since I was born. When I was old enough to start playing basketball, I fell in love with it immediately and knew instantly this was my sport. This sport has been a part of my life for a long time. Even though I did not make the basketball team in ninth grade, I still kept trying and trying. Basketball is not just a sport to me, it is part of who I am and will always be. I have loved basketball and I will always love basketball. It is a part of me. To sum it all up, I would take my Bible, an Ole Miss football and a basketball as my possessions with me. These are just a few items that are very valuable to me. I know there are many more items I could take, but these would be the ones I prize the most. These are just a few of the items that I will take to my tomb with me." |
