"The worst thing that ever happened ..."

to Doug Johnson was getting drafted to play baseball right out of high school. He got a big chunk of change for his brief stint, and he was way too immature to handle it. I'm not saying he blew his money--in fact, he made some excellent real estate investments--but he flaunted it in front of his teammates. This was, ultimately, the thing that alienated Doug from the team. He played with a bunch of guys who wouldn't be able to eat but for the training table, and he always had all the latest toys and let them know it. He had a big, shiny SUV with a vanity plate, and he always parked it right where everyone had to walk around it on their way to and from practice. He owned his own apartment complex (at age 18 or 19), and several of his teammates lived there. It was a bit weird, to say the least, to have to protect your landlord out on the football field. He was already probably pretty cocky, but also being rich in that environment made him even more socially inept.
