"Wow was that fun. Most fun game since the BCS game against OK." |
Now some thoughts. The Vol fans and players were WAY overconfident heading into the game. UT hasn't been ranked in years. They're 0 for 10 against ranked teams under Dooley. They beat up on two cupcakes this year. We had just gone into Texas A&M and, after trailing at the half, pulled out the game. Granted, we were pretty weak the last two years (though we beat the Vols each of those years). In all, there really wasn't much reason for either team to be overconfident heading into this game. The problem with overconfidence is that there's a letdown if and when the other team shows up for a fight, which the Gators did. Early on, we weren't getting the running game going, penalties were racking up, Bray was playing well, and we missed a couple really good TD opportunities. (So frustrating to watch us not scored a TD with a 2nd and goal from the 1-yard line. How about a sneak with the 6'4" 240-lb QB?). Imho, UT outplayed us for most of the first three quarters. Not by a huge amount, but they definitely seemed to be in control of the game. Then a funny thing happened. UT missed an extra point, going up 20-13 instead of 21-13. We then stalled, going for it on a fake punt at midfield. Then, on the very next play, Bray panicked and threw the ball away and drew a grounding penalty. (What's funny is that I've read a bunch of Vols saying he should've just taken the sack. Uhhhh, that's all the penalty does, i.e. loss of down and ball spotted where it was thrown from.) The Vols have to kick, we get the ball at the 20, and Burton runs for an 80-yard score. Game tied. Yet game over. From there UF rolled with big play after big play on offense and defense. The Gillislee runs. The great Driskell throw to Reed. The Hammond TD on a great read by Driskell, a great blitz pick-up, and a great run by Hammond. The constant pressure by the D-line, especially McCray, on Bray and his total collapse. The interception. Everybody got in on it. The team got behind on the road in a hostile environment against a decent team. They trailed late in the third quarter with Tennessee driving. But they never gave up. No way. They dug deep, stayed loose, and let loose. Driskel came through like a true leader. He made numerous big plays. And once UF finally got hold of the momentum, they never took the foot off the gas. No garbage TDs. No prevent D. No mercy. This team clearly has mental toughness. We've just witnessed the first back-to-back wins when trailing at the half in over 40 years. And those second halves were total dominations. If we can keep this up, it's going to be a really fun year. |
