Message Replied To ========== GMAFB. He's a basketball coach. It's an inferior sport..... Billy D has done a fine job at UF by recruiting. His greatest accomplishment is that he recruited three top 10 NBA picks to play on one team at UF. Impressive feet but hardly coaching genius. He has never been one to actually win with coaching when he doesn't have a decided talent advantage. He may be UF's greatest recruiter. But apart from the football>basketball thing, i can see part of what you're trying to say, i really can. Coincidentally, long before this thread and probably spurred by two straight incredibly disappointing Elite Eight failures, i have seriously pondered the following question: What is the worst thing you can say about Billy Donovan as a coach? After thinking about it for a while, the answer i came up with was, "That when he doesn't have an abundance of NBA talent, he doesn't win championships." That's the best i could do and hey, guess what? That's true of EVERY man coaching in NCAA hoops today. Not most, not almost all, not all but one.....everybody. That's the single "worst" thing i can say about his coaching record, and the obvious counterpoint or flipside to that statement is that when he does accrue an impressive collection of top talent, he friggin GETS THE JOB DONE. And strangely enough, you can't say that about every other coach out there. Nor can you say it about every other UF coach. Spurrier had the best team in the country in 2001, but was lost without Earnest Graham. Urban Meyer fielded an NFL team in 2009, but couldn't win the SEC. Kevin O' Sullivan.......oh, bless his heart, where do i start with this guy......let's just say that 5-8 years from now when multiple former Gators are starring in MLB we will again wonder HOW in the hell he managed to somehow not win a CWS with all that talent. Trust me. If Billy Donovan was an unpleasant, blistering #badword# to deal with, or an NCAA violation waiting to happen, or had an out of control personal life, didn't ALWAYS represent himself and The University of Florida with the absolute utmost of class, dignity, intelligence and respectability, you know what, he'd still be among the top coaches in NCAAB and in Gator history. But the fact that he gets the job done in a bottom line business, and with 100% consistency does it the way that EVERYONE else wishes they could do it, sets him on a completely different level than anyone else who would be mentioned in the conversation. We're lucky to have him, and i hope he stays forever. |
