"I haven't seen UF play much" |
Message Replied To ========== I love this Billy quote, and the team seems to have taken it to heart "When you're up by a large margin, that does not give you the right not to do your job," Donovan said. "The scoreboard's got nothing to do with responsibility on the court, and they've done a pretty good of playing every possession." It's why like some here I'm not worried that we haven't been in any close games lately. This team doesn't play any different when it's up 20 than when it's down by 5. http://scores.espn.go.com/ncb/recap?gameId=330300057 ==============================but I've seen the numbers and they are incredibly impressive. I think this team also shows Donovan's flexibility as a coach, as this personnel is considerably different from the last time he had a team this good (2006-7, IMO). This team is playing some of the best defense I've seen in NCAA basketball in recent memory. They're also playing at an incredibly slow tempo, which means their opponents are scoring very low point totals (less than 60 points in 15 of 19 games). What the tempo also does, though, is mask how good the offense is. In schedule-adjusted points-per-possession, UF is #2, only behind Michigan (whose defense isn't nearly as good). Adjusted for schedule, UF is scoring 1.233 PPP and giving up 0.796 PPP. This means that if UF were playing an average schedule, every exchange of possessions would net UF 0.437 points. That doesn't seem like a lot until you consider that UF's games average 63.1 possessions each . . . so on average UF is 27.5 points better than its opponents after you adjust for schedule strength (where UF is in the top 50). That's tops in the nation by more than 2.5 PPG (only 5 teams are above 20). It's also 2+ PPG better than either of Billy's championship teams, and both of them played at a faster pace. Of course there is a lot of season left to be played. I am not rooting for you by any stretch of the imagination but this is another masterful job by Donovan, who I have a ton of respect for. It will not surprise me one bit to see this team in the Final Four. |
