I also don't support the "fight everything" approach to gun regulation. I don't see any reason why a reasonable, gun-owning American would oppose properly conducted background checks as a prerequisite to owning a gun.

2nd greatest amendment need was for gun ownership for a free state? This is the kind of mindset that dictators love...."just trust me I'll protect you, just lay your weapons (and your freedom) on the table"....reminds me of the "trustworthy" senator and his yankee buddies in The Outlaw Josey Wales. 

As to the background checks, we already have them and those who attempt to buy illegally are seldom punished. None of the recent shootings were perpetrated by persons who bought weapons illegally, they were however perpetrated by people KNOWN to be mentally deficient and yet those who purport to be soooooo concerned about children safety from gun violence have opposed making medical records related to mental health part of the screening process and have opposed guards in schools claiming it makes it more dangerous???? I don't see one thing being proposed that will stop criminals intent on killing. I do however see disingenuous arguments intended to get the proverbial door opened a little wider so they can push it further open with more ineffective legislation as soon as the current proposals prove ineffective in stopping the next nutjob.
