that might help the President - in other words, they hate Obama more than they love doing what is right for the country. As someone said to Maureen Dowd recently, the President is not the jerk whisperer. And this is hardly about guns, as they are even blocking the most innocuous appointments, but despite their best efforts, there are some things they can't stop from happening:

the reservation many have is not with background checks, per se ..... we have them already.  It isn't necessarily with expanding the same, so long as it is not some ineffectual kneejerk response.  It isn't even a concern that we are failing to address those things (mainly mental health) which actually have a demonstrated connection to mass shootings in a way that "assault rifles" or background checks as proposed never did, could, or would.  Further, it isn't born of the frustration with the apparent unwillingness to enforce even those laws currently on the books.

No, while there are certainly some who oppose background checks for these reasons and some for perhaps unfounded concerns, the reservations of many are due to a total lack of trust with those in and out of government whose previous utterances and actions belie a charade of innocent concern instead of a clearly demonstrated desire and intent to ultimately limit the 2nd-Amendment freedoms of law-abiding citizens.  That they wrap themselves with a cloak of justification by using the deaths of children who would not have been saved by their proposal merely adds to the disdain many have for the perceived disingenuousness.
