10,000 posts! Let me use this historic moment in time to remind each and every one of you of the most significant beat down in the history of rivalries: A year after Nebraska took the Gators behind the tool shed in an event to for every been known as the “Fiasco Bowl”, a rejuvenated Gator squad started the season in similar fashion to the previous; we were walking over opponents with our high powered offense and dominating defense where we repeatedly scored in the 40s, 50s and 60s while we kept our competition in check. (Lest we forget beating Kentucky 65-0 or LSU 56-13 or UGA 47-7). Then came that fateful game in Tallahassee; Week 14/ #1 Gators vs. #2 noles… we lost that game by 3 points… but all was not really lost. In hindsight; this was the only possible scenario where an end of the year rivalry could possibly rematch for a national title. The Gators were destined for greatness. After week #14, the #1 Gators fell to #4 (AP poll), but with an SEC title still on the line against Bama, and a few other games to be played out, the Gators were still very much in it. The Gators had their way with Bama that year and took the win by 15 points in the Georgia Dome. Meanwhile, #3 Nebraska lost in the Big 12 Championship to Texas and then #2 Arizona State fell in the Rose Bowl to tOSU. Note: this all occurred before the Sugar Bowl kick-off. Everyone in attendance, including a liver spotted old coach on the opposing sidelines knew what was at stake. The winner of this rivalry game was going home with the hardware. Danny Wuerfful, Coach Steve Spurrier, and the rest of the Gators did not disappoint. The Fiasco bowl memories of 1995 would be wiped away in epic format. Nowhere in the history of modern football had a rival been beaten so badly when all of the marbles where on the table. There was no sweeter taste than avenging your only loss to a hated rival, for the championship in the Sugar Bowl; 52-20.
