Message Replied To ========== So, what would you do? I've already typed this post, but due to my injured ring finger on my left hand, I have to keep retyping #@####! I had this post typed twice, but my hammerhead wrapped finger either hits caps or deletes it without my intention!!! You're at a casual dinner party, getting along with everyone you meet, when half of the group leaves. You've already have had the discussion over the Z trial previously, so your racial profiling feelings are put out there (mine, not SA's). Everyone settles in to the same table after everyone else leaves, so we sit around talking, when the subject turns to guns. The British woman, speaks up to tell a joke as if it's a true story and says, " We live in a neighborhood that's full of blacks. My husband goes out to set the new laser on his gun.......and I quote......".I've lived in the south long enough now that I can say it...There were 5 #badword#s sitting in the back of the truck and the red light appeared on one of his shirts and he about beat himself trying to get the red spot off of his shirt." Ha ha ha ha ha Everyone laughs, I did a quite uncomfortable "ha ha" as I looked at Greg. Nothing else was said between us, as it was a you have to be kidding me moment. This woman didn't have a clue that we have biracial kids. The very next comment came from someone that KNOWS our kids........"No, you're in the south now, we don't call them #badword#s, we call them porch monkeys" Upon statement, we didn't have to say a word between us, or even give a look, Greg just asked, "are you about ready to go?" I said, yes, it's time we go. We bit our tongues to avoid what could have been an ugly incident, told everyone it was nice meeting them, offered to help the hostess clean up every thing else that was left from my help before, hugged the host and hostess good bye and thanked them. Yet we were accused today of being rude, and thinking that we were above other people because we left. "It's not like they called your kids a #badword#!" I'm curious what all of you what have done. Personally, I think we both used the most restraint we've used in our lives!!!! ============================== ...that the main problem many are expressing concern about is that these things were said in front of someone with biracial kids. SW, I understand that you certainly took the comments more personally because of that, but I also know you well enough to know that it wasn't because of your kids that your were ticked off. My guess is that you were ticked off because the comments were racist, ignorant, backward, and wrong. When I hear comments like that, it doesn't tick me off because I have family members who are black. It ticks me off because black people are fellow human beings who deserve better, whether I know them myself or not. The problem in this instance wasn't that those things were said in front of you, it was that they were said at all. |
