"I think the light finally came on for me..." |

Message Replied To ========== I have to give the coaching staff credit being smarter than the fans. While we wanted to see a wide open attack and a blowout of a lesser opponent, the coaching staff was trying to win the game. Sure we could have tried to throw the ball more downfield but Toledo's safties were playing way off the ball which invited us to run and throw the ball short. Penalties cost us anywhere from 7-14 points and gave Toledo 3 points. The score should have been 38-3 against a pretty decent MAC team. And that is playing without four very key starters. I don't think we are going to see an explosive offense, just more of the same from last year. Great defense and special teams and a plodding attack. Though this year we are light years ahead in the running game with the emergence of Brown and the addition of Herndon, Taylor, and perhaps Lane. We have to go with what we have and right now we don't have a QB that is going to pick apart defenses with the passing game. There is no consistency between QB and receivers. The only guys we can depend on right now is Burton. The other guys are going to have to develop as the season goes on. We can be a better team this year than last, if we can just eliminate the penalties.============================== Last year during the f$u game. I kept thinking all year long, that we were going to suddenly turn it on and never look back, but it never happened. Midway through the 3rd quarter of the f$u game, I began to think... this is it. This is the best we are going to be. I love our defense, and have always loved Gillislee, but man we are not ever going to be a 'knock out - one punch' team. Midway through the 4th quarter, I realized, I like being 'Rocky' in this case. I actually LIKE being the team, that everybody discounts, and underestimates, and then comes to realize in the 4th quarter, that this team is taking your punches, and hitting you back, blow for blow. And guess what, this team punches even harder in the 4th quarter, and you're wearing down. By the time the clock hits zero, you realize that this team has kicked your ass...
