To the editor:
I just finished reading Luther Campbell's column about UF "racism." Once again, Luke proves he has no idea what he is talking about.
Let's get the facts straight. While the 1950s were a shameful time in the state's history, I'd challenge Professor Campbell to compare UF's record vs. the University of Miami's. Florida admitted its first African American students in 1958. UM in 1961. UM was founded as a white coed private school in 1926. Its band played "Dixie" at football games until 1968. None of the 1980s Canes' teams, many of them featuring players that Luke Campbell admittedly paid, had an African American quarteback.
In contrast, the Gators had African American starting QBs in the 1970s and 1980s, as was the quarterback who lead us to the 2006 national championship. (Chris Leak). I prefer to think of these outstanding young men as Gators, but since Luke wants to cast aspersions, I got specific.
By the way, there are plenty of reasons why players are asked to change positions, none of which have to do with race. Chris Collinsworth, white male, was a QB in high school. What's Dr. Campbell's explanation for why Collinsworth had to become a WR?
Luke's reference to Gainesville, one of the most progressive cities in the South, as a "tea party capital", suggests that Luke Campbell has never actually been to Gainesville. That's okay, and consistent, since he didn't attend the University of Miami either.
In short, Luke Campbell does not know what he's talking about. He should stick to what he does best, which is dropping adoloescent dirty lyrics about sex that could have been written by a 13 year old kid over some real musician's music.
Go Gators.
