"Went to the game. Here are some observations and thoughts." |
|
1. The weather was overcast the entire game, which made the temperature far more bearable. 2. As did being able to buy beer in the stadium. 3. The parking lot was a swamp. Loved watching the guy in his Corvette unsuccessfully try to avoid the huge potholes and pools of water. Must've been a Cane, hehehe. 4. There were a lot of empty seats and a ton of Gator fans. Quietest visiting stadium I've ever been to. 5. Plenty of stereotypical Canes fans, though the ones we were with were classy as hell. 6. I was in the Gator section, but there were a few random Canes fans. I hate that #badword#e. 7. As for the game, I was way up in the corner, so it was hard for me to pick up out names, but here goes. 8. Our defense played very well. Not a total domination due to the couple of big plays, but overall the D was suffocating. There were no running lanes, and Miami's receivers were typically well covered. Our D line dominated. I've never seen a great team without a great defense, and with a great defense you don't have to a great offense to have a solid record. We were 11-2 last year with much the same offense. We didn't get lucky to have that record. I don't recall any random breaks that just happened out of the blue that turned losses into wins. 9. Kyle Christy has become a mediocre punter. I don't know what's happened to him. Saw him last year in the Swamp and he was booming his kicks. He started losing it toward the end of last year. Now he's firing blanks. The one in the fourth quarter was a line drive, right at the worst time. In contrast, the Miami punter had a tremendous game. Huge, high spirals that were angled to boot. This made a big difference in field position. The reason our drives were so long were because we were always starting at our 20 even when we stuffed them deep in their territory. 10. In contrast to what I've read, I thought the O-line did okay. They weren't opening up huge lanes, but they were getting a push forward. 11. Driskel had ample time to throw. He wildly missed open receivers or failed to see them altogether. He was especially bad in crucial situations. This year, instead of running out of bounds six yards behind the line of scrimmage when he could've just thrown the ball away, he's turning it over like a true freshman. Against mediocre defenses, no less. As Hung said, he just doesn't seem to have the "it" factor. He was telegraphing his throws, and the defense was clearly taking advantage of it. You could really see this from way high up. He's slow on his reads, and he seems incapable of hitting a guy in stride. I watched the UGA-SC shootout yesterday. Go routes, slants, seams, posts, corners--both QBs were hitting them all day. We have very, very, very few such plays. 12. Tough to comment on Matt Jones. He didn't look explosive, but that might be because it's hard to look explosive when running into the line. That said, if someone doesn't look explosive for whatever reason, at the very least give everyone else a try. Because Showers to the outside did look explosive. Naturally he only got four carries. 13. We had numerous lengthy, time-consuming drives, which supports the notion that the offense isn't all that bad. 14. Five turnovers plus another on downs. What more needs to be said? Well, just this. It sucks that it happened and underscores that this is not a MNC team. It may be a coaching issue, but it's probably a player issue. Having such a turnover disparity hasn't been a Muschamp legacy to this point, and I don't expect it to become habitual. I hate it when other teams say they gave us a game by turning the ball over, so I'm not going to say we gave the game to Miami. They created turnovers both by making plays and by taking advantage of our mistakes and miscues. 15. I'm okay with most of the offensive playcalling, but some of it just baffles me. Like when we had a sustained drive in the second half, ran on first and second down to set up a third and 2, and then we go to the five wide set and throw deep. WTF? If you're going to play power football, I say go down in flames with it. Run two more times. Yeah it sucked turning it over on downs. But at least we were playing to our strength. Was turning it over via interceptions somehow better? 16. Is there a rule in our playbook that says we can't ever run a play action? 17. This team is still in transition. We have a lot of talent, but we don't have standouts on offense at the QB, RB, or WR position. We don't have a single standout skill player. Plenty look good, but none look like high draft picks at this point. 18. I didn't have high expectations for this season, and while I desperately wanted to win this game, I wasn't overconfident. So I'm disappointed but far from depressed. I like the direction our team is headed, though we need to keep progressing, as there's a long way to go from where we are and the upper echelon.
