"My take on the game..." |
|
First of all, Will Muschamp is a good coach. He is not a guy who made a name for himself by riding the coattails of more successful coaches. He didn't ascend to greatness because he happened to be coaching on an undefeated team with a couple first-rounders who made him look better than he was. He did more with less at Auburn as their DC. He's done the same at nearly ever place he's been on. The biggest problem with Will Muschamp, imo, is that offensive football is completely foreign to him. It seems to be like a completely different language. He knows what breaks a good offense, but he doesn't really know what makes it. In the past couple years, he seems to be oblivious to which coaches to hire, which strategies to adopt, which players to recruit and how to get players to work effectively at moving the ball. There is just something about offense that he doesn't know. Will Muschamp is a good coach, but he's not a great head coach. He lacks the seasoning on every side of the ball that a head coach does. The thing is, if Muschamp had "lucked" into good skill positions on offense, an established coordinator, etc, just caught a few breaks on that side of the ball, he would probably look a lot like Saban. He has a defensive mentality and that does win championships. The thing is, Muschamp didn't "luck" into any offensive breaks. He was forced to build an offense to compete in a tough league without knowing much about it; and that's really unfortunate. It's unfortunate that he walked into a situation with no break-out WRs, no break-out QBs, no strong offensive linemen. He can't sell that to recruits either. He's gotten a few good running backs and, honestly, these RBs would compete on any roster. He is in a crappy offensive situation and I don't honestly think he knows how to get out of it. I said a few weeks ago that Murphy was not the answer. I still don't think he is. The problem is, who do you turn to on this team and ask them to create production on their talent? We literally have no one on this roster who can do that, outside of the running back position. So yeah, I'm not happy with how the game went. Blah, blah, blah, everyone is going to find something in this post to disagree with. That's fine. I just think very, very, very, few (probably no) coaches could turn this is situation around in a year or two. And it takes less effort to get a good coach like Muschamp to right the ship, than have a completely new and untested guy to attempt to do the same thing. All we need is some offensive talent. Maybe Muschamp can go to a workshop or something. I dunno. |
