Message Replied To ========== Why is the offense bad? a) The offense sucks b/c muschamp's philosphy is too conservative and he's handcuffed the OC and staff b) The offense sucks b/c it has too, we don't have the talent to do what Pease wants (especially on OL) c) The offense sucks b/c Pease and the O staff aren't very good d) The offense sucks b/c we have lost too many players to injury My perception is that like most things, the reason the offense sucks probably a combination of all these things, but I think it is mostly attributable to A and C. I do not think muschamp ever wants to have a prolific offense (your guess as to why is as good as mine), and I think that over the course of 3+ years now, the DNA of the program has changed on that side of the ball. IMO, it will take some time and hard work to fix that. You could tell in our first game vs. Akron that we were not going to be much better on offense this year, even with all of our starters - we played it close to the vest, and all of the people who said we were saving it for scUM were wrong, IMO. If ever there had been a game to show you could do some new things, that would have been it, so I knew when we didn't that we couldn't. We may be a little better record-wise this season with fewer injuries on O, but does anyone think we'd be 8-1? I don't. So muschamp will get to fire the offensive staff and start over (again). We've all been talking about who might be our next HBC, but who out there can we get to come in and fix the offense???? BBG ============================== ...injuries in key positions really killed us, and Pease doesn't know how to deliver the offense that Coach Boom envisions. My take (and only mine) is that Pease doesn't help all that much in recruiting and is just mediocre in innovative play calling, so he'll be gone for those reasons. He simply doesn't bring enough value add.
We have decent RBs, and the OL when mostly healthy was respectable enough to create openings for at least 2 of our backs. Our WRs are a serious problem for running Muschamp's offense. We need guys like Riley Cooper and Louis Murphy, big WRS who can also block, and we have little guys instead who still cannot separate most of the time.
Add in QBs who hold the ball too long (Driskel) or are simply not athletic enough (Murphy), then we appear to be more one-dimensional than we really are in terms of philosophy. Muschamp would love to open it up and take advantage of the aggressive defenses against us, but our players are not capable of beating SEC level talent.
Just like Spurrier's offenses sucked at S Carolina when he couldn't field players who scared SEC defenses, ours sucks now. In my opinion, trying to throw the ball all over the yard with our QB and our WRs would be a major strategic error. Obviously, I believe Pease is unimaginative in these trying circumstances, but that doesn't mean I believe he's terrible. It just means he isn't good enough for UF, especially is he isn't helping bring us the horses we need to be competitive.
As for the head coach, remember that Meyer is the one who chose Brantley over Cam Newton and who left mostly, in my view, because his recruiting suffered so much his last 18 months. We also had to suffer with Addazio as OC under Meyer. Sure, that's been a while ago and isn't an excuse for this staff. The point is even Urban Meyer can make these types of decisions that have a lasting impact on the new leadership that replaced him. Blaming Muschamp as "inadequate" because those issues still linger, along with the injuries as they are, is too harsh, imo. I believe Muschamp's own words are clear that he understands the situation and what needs to change, so I wouldn't make a HC switch at this time, regardless of what happens during the remainder of this year. I seriously doubt we'll see one, so we might as well not keep talking as if we will. |
