" I always think of two Urban Meyers" |
|
Message Replied To ========== I am mellowing on Urban. His record at UF is self-evident. All good things end. He was ours. So was SOS. I would gladly pull for Meyer against FSU, and prefer him obtaining a national title at a second school to seeing Saban win another. ==============================So yes, I think of him as two-faced and a hypocrite, especially when he speaks of putting others first, blah, blah blah.
For this post, I am very thankful to the guy who worked so hard to bring two national titles to UF. We should never forget those, obviously. I told a prominent player on the 2006 team recently that the national title game against Ohio State was the most fun I ever had at a Gator game. It was a fantastic time to have Meyer in the program. Despite my characterization above, the guy did perform really well and worked really hard for people like me as well as for himself, maybe to the point of nearly killing him (or at least stressing him out to the point of poor health).
Of course, there is the Urban Meyer who took millions of dollars from UF for two years and basically didn't work for it at all. When I'm being really critical, I say he stole $8 million to $10 million for two years of nothing but helping Addazio audition for a job -- and he took it from people like you and me. Yes, that's hyperbole, but there is enough truth to it to give any of us pause.
Why? UF bent over backwards for Meyer, showering him with time off, continued money, extra assistants, whatever he needed to lighten the load and get his life right in order FOR HIM TO COME BACK FULL FORCE TO US when things were right. That was the deal between UF and Meyer, which by default means between ME and Meyer. What did Meyer do? He took all those benefits and cash and ran away, not fulfilling his end of the deal/promise. He left the program he built in shambles in the process, much worse than even when he got here. We don't even get an apology, and we certainly don't get our money back. More importantly, all the things we provided to him when he asked for them were left as a broken, dysfunctional mess.
Which is his legacy? Both, of course. The championships should have top billing, but always with an asterisk for the slimy, low character moments when he screwed us, too. He's probably a better fit at Ohio State, with lower pressure due to weak competition and no fans caring about his broken promises elsewhere -- until it happens to them, too. |
