"I attended Florida State for 1 1/2 years" |

Message Replied To ========== Note to self: do not send my daughter to Fla. State Some absolutely vile stuff on my FB news feed from my Nolie buds about Jameis' accuser, all the while urging people not to rush to judgment about a "kid" whose only known contribution to these FB posters is his ability to throw a football. These same 40-50 year old dads of daughters are holding court on how "the best college football player in America" is being set up by a scorned "jock groupie" and how the accuser should be prosecuted. And these are well respected Nole alums. I like these guys in real life. Imagine what the zealots have to say about this. Damn. As if I needed a reminder to never allow my kids to consider SoW. Open season on coeds by jocks. They should put up a sign. ============================== I was 18. My first college experience. I have to say I was shocked and expected so much more. I had been a good high school student and thought college would be even more challenging but also intellectually engaging That's why you go to college, right? Well, I was a dumb kid with VERY limited information. I don't even recall looking at rankings or thinking about them - I was selecting based on weather, funding, and proximity to extended family. So I gleefully chose Florida State and embraced my new school. I went to games, got a hat and a bumper sticker, etc. You know, things that kids do when they want to feel like they are a part of something. But within weeks, I must say I was appalled by the lack of quality among the students. Nobody seemed to be the least bit intellectual. Stultifyingly dead classes, coked out idiots head-butting vending machines, and the persistent threat of crime just off campus. I never felt safe in Tally, and was also put off by the constant CONSTANT political bull$hit. What an unhappy town. The people are always fighting. Bitter. Divided racially. EVERYTHING is racial. And there was no reprieve at FSU, where anybody with any ambition whatsoever (the precious few) had some kind of chip on their shoulder or axe to grind, and most the rest were there to check the degree box and get drunk. And then thee was the persistent inferiority complex about UF, which basically consisted of calling them homosexual. Had I known then what I know now, I would have set my sights INFINITELY higher. Going to FSU was a disastrous mistake and I would not recommend it. As it stands, I eventually did aim higher. And now when I look back at the mess that place has become, I am thankful that I have no association with any of it. |
