In Minnesota, I grew up with a guy by the name of Mathew McPherson. Mathew liked to hunt. He also liked to work with his hands and was a gifted craftsman. When he was 17, he made me a beautiful recurve laminated mahogany / fiberglass bow in high school shop class.

When I was 19, I moved to Florida and lost touch with Mathew. Many years go by. Some of my nephews in Vero Beach became avid bow hunters. I told them about the bow Mathew made for me. Suddenly their eyes lit up... Mathew? Mathew McPherson? You grew up with him and he made you a custom bow?

I had no idea that Mathew had become an innovative successful entrepreneur. He holds several patents on compound bow design, and owns Mathews, Inc. (www.mathewsinc.com), often considered by bow hunting enthusiasts to be the best bows you can buy, sold only through small retail shops that work to custom tweak the bow for each owner.

In my garage a couple years ago, I located the bow that Mathew had made for me many years ago in shop class. I contacted the company by email, and offered them the bow. Mathew's admin emailed me back and said how happy Mathew was to hear from me. Yes, Mathew would love to have the old bow and, in return, I can pick any bow I'd like from his catalog. I got a brand new Reezen (top of the line at that time).

Now for the suggestion. New bows are constantly being introduced, and many enthusiasts just have to have the latest. Check into getting a used one. Try Craigslist for example. My Reezen cost $899. You might find a used one for maybe 1/3 of that.
