Message Replied To ========== That's kind of meaningless though isn't it?.... Picking a "favorite" doesn't necessarily mean a person doesn't have significant interest in other sports. For example, Golf would probably come in somewhere around fifth for me, but I'm extremely interested in the majors and watch as much of those as I can. Probably not many people would pick college basketball as their overall "favorite", but look how popular March Madness is. ==============================...but yes, there is an inherent flaw in self-reported statistics. It actually turns out to be a major flaw too. Having said that, the NFL has built-in advantages that college football doesn't. The NFL universe is self-contained. The NFL owns the rights to all its associated brands without any intermediaries whatsoever. The NFL has its own governing body. The NFL sets up franchises that deals directly with the local governments and stadiums are built by the tax payers. Things such as competition, strength of schedule, player acquisition, officiating and the games themselves are distributed as fairly as can be legislated by the NFL. So when a team does poorly, the fans blame the individual owners, coaches or players and NOT the system. So the system itself does not disenfranchise fans from year-to-year. NFL franchises are also heavily supported by the local media in large populated areas. i.e. when Rutgers was doing good, they still didn't get the same press that the NFL got for the hapless Jets. College football is like the local, family-owned hamburger joint. Sure, they get lines that go out to the parking lot. Sure, people will drive 2 hours just to get their bacon, guava chip bison burger. It may even have the best hamburgers on the planet, but McDonalds will always get more business. McDonalds just has all the advantages that the mom & pop hamburger joint does not. |
