"If the teams from every major conference were limited to signing only 3-stars.." |
|
Message Replied To ========== Just throwing this out there on Signing Day I could only find HS star ranking for 2 NFL teams, the Bucs and the Broncos.
http://www.bucsnation.com/2014/2/5/5382964/buccaneers-high-school-recruiting-ratings ============================== ....let's call the major conferences the SEC, Big 10, Pac 10, the ACC and the Big 12 Anyway, let's say you only let them sign consensus 3-stars or lower, I'm sure these conferences would still be the best by a large margin. I would go onto say that 4-and-5 stars in the NFL would go down drastically, but obviously not completely because there are "can not miss" players who are very obvious to spot. This is just a hypothetical, so obviously it could never be done. This is difficult for me to explain, but it's just a theory: guys in the top conferences get better coaching (both prep and game day), they are in more competitive environments, try harder to succeed, and take their development more seriously. Football is such a mental game. For me, being good, for lack of a better expression, is about "street smarts on the football field". It's all about the mental and physical training. Recruiting sites and coaches rate certain players high. I'm not saying these methods are stupid, but they're voyeurs at best. They look into a situation and try extrapolating how all that translates to the next level. A flaw is very much built-in to the system. It's the same flaw the NFL has each year: They look for the same exact things all the time, so everything is built from a prototype that they can not afford to deviate from. They look for the same things they looked for before. They judge success based on its ability to live up to whatever those expectations were. It's a self-perpetuating, self-fulfilling prophecy. Even if a case here and there proves them wrong or contradicts their standards of extrapolating success, they won't give up those standards. So I say, give them all three stars, eliminate their bias and you'll probably find that their bias was irrelevant to success in most cases. |
