One disadvantage of being a doctor
My son's car, a 2000 Lincoln LS, has hit 100,000 miles so I bring it in to get servicing. I leave my work number for the mechanic to reach me..at first the cost is what I expected_$200 (had to replace some bearings etc) but 1 hour later I get a callback that there is a catastrophic oil valve leak and it will cost $2700 to repair it. Do I want to go on or they will still take it as a trade in if I want to buy a new car. I am surprised because the car is running fine and it is not leaking oil. I was actually planning on giving my wife my car and driving my son's car for a year while he is a freshman in the dorms at UF.
I decline and tell him I will just take the car as is because I can sell it for parts for more than they will give me as a trade in.
When I pick it up I see that only the valve gasket covers need to be replaced..
Then I realize..when he called the phone was answered as "Dr Chemosabe" so of course the price had to go up.
The actual cost to replace the gasket covers is $400.
