AA: Why Muschamp can't win unless UF wins big in '14--fan expectations?

..good read although wrapped in a drug narrative..

==============================

its not just about Spurrier or what the fans "feel like" in terms of their preference for this Offensive style over that.  We could go back much further here:

Bob Woodruff - conservative offense in the 50's = mediocrity for UF

Ray Graves - wide open offense  in the 60's = return to pre 1930's glory and winning for UF

Doug Dickey - conservative offense in the 70's = mediocrity for UF ending in utter disaster and being surpassed by in-state rivals (both of whom used wide open offenses to ride their way to national prominence for the first time).

Pell/Hall - middle of the road between conservative and wide open offense = return to almost 60's level of winning for UF.

Spurrier - wide open offense = unprecedented breakthrough and sustained success bringing us mostly up to par with our in-state rivals who continued riding those wide open offenses to mega success.

Zook - middle of the road between conservative and wide open offense = slip to 1980's levels of success overall

Meyer - middle of the road between conservative and wide open Offense = greatest success in program history.

Muschamp - conservative offense and results worse than Zook's.

See the pattern here?  When UF tries to go conservative it has ended in decline and/or disaster every single time going back over two generations.  A big part of this is the kind of talent available in the state (ie excellent skill players) and the kind of Offense they want to play (wide open, PASSING THE BALL...PASSING ON EARLY DOWNS.....go up tempo....attack the perimeter).  You run that style of Offense at a big Florida school and you're going to get great talent...and you're going to win.  Don't and you won't.  Unfortunately, fsu figured this out and started passing like crazy this past season...and only ran the table and won a heisman and a national championship and has now gained utter domination in recruiting in Florida even though UF held the whip hand under Urban Meyer. eg last year they got the 5 star back we wanted and had committed and two rivals top 100 players at WR from Florida despite UF's obvious huge talent hole at the position and all the early playing time available and despite them being far more stocked at this position.

Its not an "addiction".  Its an observation based on what has worked and what has not going back a long way. Its the talent the state produces in such abundance, what they want (and do not want) and generations of history among all 3 of the big in-state programs backing up this observation.  Florida - the entire state - is temperamentally unsuited to the plow up the middle for no gain and punt and hope to grind out 14-13 victories mentaility.  You can do that at Nebraska.  You can do that at Alabama.  You cannot do that in Florida.  That's just not who we are.

"I yet believe that the maintenance of the rights and authority reserved to the states and to the people, not only essential to the adjustment and balance of the general system, but the safeguard to the continuance of a free government. I consider it as the chief source of stability to our political system, whereas the consolidation of the states into one vast republic, sure to be aggressive abroad and despotic at home, will be the certain precursor of that ruin which has overwhelmed all those that have preceded it." Robert E. Lee
