That moment came for me on June 5th in what would be the 3rd of 4 interviews, in 4 different cities, for an amazing opportunity. As I sat across from the Florida General Manager, the Southeast VP walked in....she gave me a hug....and when the others in the room commented that they didn't realize we knew each other, the VP piped up and said, "Yes I know Jason, he has saved our butts many times".
Fast forward to Tuesday...I was called, offered a new position, received an offer letter with terms the likes of which this former teacher could have never dreamed of given my first year's salary in 1994 was less than $24,000, and faxed back my acceptance within a 3 hour time frame. After vacation next week I will assume my new role of Account General Manager for medium sized school districts in the state of Florida. In my new role, I will be the single sales contact for my school districts for every single product we sell; a portfolio so vast that even having the necessary inch deep/mile wide knowledge of each will be daunting. I will have 15 or so product line specialists to provide the inch wide mile deep sales support needed to meet customer sales presentation needs, and an army of area specific consultants to utilize.
I will board a flight home to Melbourne from Greensboro in about an hour. I will be commuting home from work via airline for the last time, as my customers now will all be within about 3.5 hours of me....by car, the closest of which is my home district. For nearly 5 years my weekly work commute began and ended with trips to and from an airport. I will see my children more than I have in years. I will sleep in my own bed more than hotel beds for the first time in 5 years. I cannot tell you how surreal this transition is from a travel standpoint. Those who have been road warriors will understand this feeling. Travel the likes of which we do makes you numb. Of course, the good news is, I'm still Diamond with Delta until next Feb, then will be Gold for another year. And I'm already Diamond for next year with Hilton.
