"Had Meyer not come back after retirement #1, I would have few negatives"

Message Replied To ==========

Here is the best way to summarize Urban Meyer's tenure at Florida

I realized this in talking with my dad (the 'Cane) last night.  He is our answer to Dennis Erickson, a coach who also won two national titles and coached a Heisman Trophy winner at a school that had previously enjoyed success while clearly ignoring the significant off the field issues that occurred during his tenure and leaving the program he inherited in worse shape when he left it.  While Meyer is absolutely a better overall footoball coach then Dennis Erickson ever was on his best day, but as my dad and I discussed it, the parallels between their careers coaching in the state of Florida are rather striking imo.  I am grateful for the success that we enjoyed under Urban Meyer, just as my father and brother who went to Miami are grateful for the success under Dennis Erickson, but Meyer's tenure is forever also tainted by everything else surrounding it for me, as is Erickson's career at Miami for my dad.  Just my (and my dad's two cents).

==============================

about his tenure at UF. He brought a fresh new offensive system into the SEC and rode it to two BCS titles, helped greatly by outstanding defenses and a once-in-a-generation player named Tim Tebow. Losing Mullen and replacing him with Addazio was a disaster, a decision from which we still have not recovered, due to additional poor choices at that position ever since.

The negatives UF fans now point out -- the arrest issues, the used-car salesman stuff -- none of that was important as long as he was our coach and winning. Only after he left did UF fans care about any of that.

Meyer was never ours for keeps. He lost his momentum and bailed, and eventually got his dream job at OSU. I've moved on. We need to focus on fixing the problems left over from his departure, and get back to winning SEC titles. Anything he or Shelley says at this point means little to me, because they simply don't matter any more. GO GATORS.
