UF used 72 players in the EMU game, from what I could find this is the most players participating in a Gator game since 2009. I think it speaks some to the poor roster construction the Gators have been dealing with over the past few seasons. Plus murderball just never allowed that number of guys to get in the game. In 2013 the most in any game was 56.

I think this has to help team morale when the players practice so much and put in the time that they actually get a few snaps in a game. 8 Gators carried the ball, 11 caught a pass, and 29 recorded at least one tackle. I think 11 offensive linemen got in the game (possibly a 12th Nick Davis a walkon)even if it was just for point afters.

Turnovers, the Gators were a +5. UF recovered all 4 footballs that hit the turf. Hopefully, UF will continue to feast on turnover luck this season.

UF ran 86 plays which again is probably a high water mark in the Muschamp era. The up tempo light style of play did not have a negative effect on time of possession (35:43)or keep the defense on the field to long. EMU was not a quality opponent but UF dictated the pace of play on offense which is a major change of philosophy.

Points per play: 86-65 .7558 per play. Points per possession: 15-65 4.333

Efficiency: defined at 4+ yards on first down, 50% of yards needed on second down, and picking up the first on third or forth down. UF was 44-86 51.16%.

UF threw 21 passes on first down and ran the ball 12 times (mostly in garbage time). This seemed to be the plan going in or EMU lined up in a way that made it advantages to throw. I'm not sure. It is possible that EMU lined up its defense to cover UF's spread in order to defend the pass, this would explain why they were gashed up the middle so much. I don't think this was a good strategy for them but whatever.

On the 21 first down passes UF had a successful play only 8 times. The 21 passes gained only 79 yards. Driskel missed some open guys on deep balls on first down or it could have been better. Some high snaps early in the game upset some of the timing on quick throws.

On the 12 first down runs, however, UF gained 177 yards. I think future opponents are going to have to keep their safties closer to the box after seeing UF tape. Driskel had some opportunities on read options on other plays to keep the ball but stayed within the game plan and handed off just about every time.

Overall the run efficiency was 21-39 51.16% and the pass efficiency was 23-47 48.94%. These are actually pretty good numbers but you have to factor the opponent.

EMU ran a successful play 23-47 48.94 but had no plays over 16 yards for the entire game. And they didn't score. EMU had 8- 3 and outs and 5 turnovers.

Field position: UF average starting point was its own 42.0, EMU's average starting point was its own 26.58.

UF net punting was 41.3 and EMU was 33.4. UF (Debose) had a good day returning punts.

One area of concern is kickoffs (at least they got lots of practice). UF only netted 42.1 yards on kickoffs. When they did not go out of bounds, EMU returned 7 kicks for 161 yards.

Red Zone: UF made 7 trips and came away with 3 TDs and 3 FGS and turned it over on downs once. Better than last year but need to see more than one game to see if UF is operating better when they have scoring chances.

Overall, lots of positives from game number one. Driskel I thought had just an average game and the offense still chugged along. Harris made two outstanding throws on his first two passes, exactly what he needs if he becomes Roper's "phantom" player. I don't think UF opened up the play book in any way. Lastly, the loss of McGee is a big setback, a TE who can stretch the field and get down the seam. Burton had a career game, for him, but he is still a little limited in what he can do.
