Player participation: UF used 53 players, 7 caught a pass and only 3 ran the ball. Probably about average for a conference game.
Efficiency: successful play defined at 4+ yards on first down play, 50% yards needed for first down on second down play, and picking up the first down on third or forth down play.
UF 50-93 (I'm not counting one play where UF spiked the ball to stop the clock) for 53.76% UK 33-78 42.31%. UF started the game 2-12 on successful plays. UK went 1-9 in the overtime period. UK's last 8 plays in OT gained 7 yards total.
On running plays UF had a successful play 30-50 for 60% and a successful pass play 20-43 46.51%
So far this season UF ranks #40 in offense effeciency and #9 in defense efficiency.
UF ran 94 plays to Kentucky's 78. UK averaged 2.5 yds. per rush for the game.
UF ran 27 times on first down and gained 145 yards. UF passed 14 times on first down and gained 85 yards.
Through two games there is a bit of a trend that UF passing on first down is not very good.
Field Position: UF average their own 26, UK average their own 24 (not counting OT).
In the first half UF had an average starting position of their own 15. This is a big reason why they couldn't score. UF could not get the field flipped due to poor offense, one INT, and UK doing just enough on offense.
UF had 2 three-and-outs, UK had 3 three-and outs.
Net punting UF 45.5 UK 39.8 yards. Christy had a big game punting the ball and was the SEC Special Teams Player of the Week.
Net KO UF 39.8 UK 29.0 At least in this game Debose is starting to have a positive effect on kick return strategy. A penalty on one kick off gave Debose a chance at a big return and he delivered, UK pooched the other kickoffs. Unless teams can blast in through the end zone Debose will be a factor here going forward.
TOP was 33:39
Turnovers: UF +2 for the game +7 for the season. The +3.5 per game is the tops in college football. One fumble hit the ground but UK recovered their own drop.
Red Zone: Greatly aided by OT set up. UF 7 trips netted 4 touchdowns and 3 field goals. 100% scoring, 57.14% scoring a TD.
Points per Possession: UF 16-36 points, again aided by OT.
Points per Play 93-36 For the game UK averaged 5.8 per play to UF 5.7
It has been mentioned before but UF had a number of breakdowns and plays where UK has behind in the chains:
2-6 gave up a 27 yard pass
2-11 gave up a 12 yard pass
3-15 gave up a 27 yard pass
2-10 gave up a 60 yard TD pass
3-10 gave up a 30 yard pass
3-10 gave up a 12 yard pass
3-16 gave up a 22 yard pass
Overall 7 plays gained 190 yards in managable defensive situations
Toss in a blown coverage on 1-10 that yielded a 33 yard TD pass, and a handful of dropped Ints and it was not a great night in the secondary.
Win Probability: Not great calculators out there for the college game so take these with a grain of salt: Considering UF was a 19 point favorite.
When UF lined up for a 39 yard field goal w/ 9:02 to play they had a 77% win probability after the miss it dropped to 60%
Win probabilty was still 66% when UF took over at its own 30 with 3:52 to go.
Dropped to 50% when UF went 3 and out.
Back to 62% when Neal made an INT with :28 to go.
Since OT rules in college football, there have been 92 games with a +10 underdog getting a game to overtime (through the 2013 season). The favorite was won 68% of these games. All you underdogs out there win it regulation or you are going down.
50+ yard FGs: so far this season college kickers not named Hardin are only 12-31 or 38.7%. Maybe it is a luxury to have a guy who can drill one of those with the game on the line (or maybe you just need to be playing the Gators because it seems like other kickers get super human or get the benefit of magic curving footballs).
Robinson aka honeythunder caught 15 balls on 21 targets. For the season he has 21 for 339 yards. Project that out for a season.
For only the 4th time in school history UF had a receiver gain 200 yards and a back go for over 100 yards (Jones)in the same game.
Dunbar has had at least one catch in 30 straight games.
Some NCAA rankings:
UF offense 77th on third down, passing efficiency #46, Your Gators are #6 in total offense. Pass O is #12, Scoring O #7.
UF defense: #5 on first down, #8 net punting, #12 rush D, #16 scor D, #22 pass effec D, #15 Total D.
S&P+ rankings of Gator opponents:
FSU 1, Bama 2, LSU 14, UGA 16, Mizzu 18, USCe 20 (UF 28), UT 53, UK 70, and Vandy 74.
F/+ rankings:
FSU 1, Bama 3, LSU 10, Mizzu 12, UGA 13, USCe 19 (UF 37), UT 64, UK 73, and Vandy 91
Simple Ranking System (avg point differential and SOS)
Bama 6, Mizzu 11, UGA 14, UT 16, FSU 18, USCe 19 (UF 20) LSU 25, UK 54, Vandy 101.
I think these rankings mean don't sleep on Mizzu.
I'm going to refain from over reacting to the UK game. UF won. Driskel was bad and then he was good. The D was good, then bad, and then good again. How is that for analysis.
Bama looms. The Tide are beatable, can the Gators do it? I'm not sure. From what I've seen Bama looks very good on offense, above average on defense (very good against the run), and horrible on special teams.
Unlike recent UF teams the Gators at least look like they can make some splash plays on offense. If they fall behind at least there is hope they can move it through the air. Robinson is a #1 receiver.
The UF defense has play makers. Hargreaves will need his A game.
Coaching and QB play will be the deciders. The line is down to 14.5 The Tide is 0-3 ATS this season.
