Dear Coach Fisher:

I understand that you believe Jameis should be held to a different standard because he is a famous college athlete. You are incorrect, sir. Allow me tell you what a student of mine, about Jameis' age, heard when he told me about this meme just this past summer.

I'm not exactly sure why he felt comfortable enough to share this with me. I suppose it is because we had developed a really nice rapport. Anyway, in conversation, he shared with me a video in which someone, whose name I can't remember, blurted the meme out in a public place and he laughed while telling me about how he and his frat brothers found it hysterical.

I ordinarily find this student's sense of humor to be really good and his demeanor playful and fun, but at this moment, his eyes went big as he endured a verbal scolding the likes of which I don't think he ever expected. To him, it was just a harmless saying; to me, it was a sign of pure, unadulterated contempt for women. He had to answer how he would feel if he had been raped and heard the same thing said but about his rectum. He heard how a supoosedly simple saying like that could terrify a woman for whom he says he has respect. 

After this went on for some time, he seemed to genuinely "get it." The reason why, Coach Fisher, is because he is indeed a man of character who fell prey to group think. Jameis, on the other hand, is never challenged. His mistakes are rationalized and swept under the rug. He appears to be a man who has never been made to feel uncomfortable and it is discomfort that causes a change in thinking and behavior.

So, Mr. Fisher, no, Jameis should not be held to a higher standard. He should be held to the same standard as all students. Yes, "normal" students say these things. Perhaps you should step up and challenge them all. Perhaps it is YOU who should be the role model.
