Message Replied To ========== My issue with Brown case... I have no idea if grand jury made the right call...wasn't there. However, what always troubles me is some officers who carry lethal force appear, by law, to be able to use it as shield of first defense. From what I surmise, the tussle in the car was life threatening since Brown was grappling for the gun. After that incident there were numerous feet (30 or so at one point) between Brown and Wilson. I believe Wilson was certain that Brown was unarmed - logic would assume so. So if Brown pursues Wilson, why does he fear for his life? His options are fire once and slow or stop him, or run and wait for backup. Wilson fires and acknowledges that he hit Brown. But Brown keeps coming. Why not run then - Brown must have been slowed or at least in some pain. Wilson claims he was backpedalling. Why not full out retreat. But most seem OK that Wilson can stand his ground or back pedal and fire away. What is so terrible about running and regrouping with backup (which he had called earlier)? If you can de-escalate, I think that should occur first. I am not saying that Wilson should be prosecuted for making a split second decision - he did not cause the situation of course...but I believe there can be discussion that his actions were not appropriate, other more experienced officers might have handled this without lose of life, or that he may not be cut out to be a cop. The media discussion is polarized and I think reasonable folk can debate this and perhaps find truth in the middle. ============================== I also keep hearing the popular refrain of "he should have shot low." Having witnessed the effectiveness first hand in combat, outside hitting a vital organ or a head shot, the best kill shot is to the thigh. The amount of blood that comes out of a femoral artery, and quickly, is astounding. Using standard issue police hollow points (we can't have those in the military because they work too well...the Geneva Conventions say we have to be humane in combat, but I digress), a shot anywhere close to the femoral artery will rupture it when due to the temporary cavity that forms when the bullet passes through tissue. Anywho, back to your issue...the onus shouldn't be on the police to flee from assault. Don't want to get shot? Don't assault a police officer. Don't want to be harrassed by the police? Don't commit strong-arm robbery (a felony, and that is what it was, after assaulting the store owner, NOT shoplifting) then taunt a police officer telling you to walk on the sidewalk. I wasn't there, but I'm not inclined to give the benefit of the doubt to thugs and their convicted felon accomplices, the latter of which was the star (and totally discreditable) witness. |
