He said, "If you don't give me a contract extension for another year, I'm going to get on the bus and go home." He said, "If you get on that bus, you're off the team." He got on the bus. I came out of Anyway, how many teams do you think would have taken the field position we had in the first 20 minutes of the game and came away with at least 17 points? How many would have came away with 20? At minimum. With four scoring opportunities early in the game on the opponents side of the field? Alabama would have had at least 24 points. Being up by two points felt like we were down by 14. That pick-six was as crushing as the Warrick Dunn play in 1993. I do not understand firing him (letting him resign) after the South Carolina game. If all accounts are true and Foley has not talked to any candidates out of a respect to not "disrupt" their seasons, then he has made another huge mistake. If it was done to help rally the team behind Muschamp for his last game, then it was a failure. If it was done to quiet down the fans and help the team focus on the remaining schedule, then it was a failure. Instead, the respective athletic departments have been given two weeks to tighten the grip around their existing coaches. I am beginning to believe Foley does not have a "guy". I am beginning to believe we painted ourselves into a corner; that other ADs will swoop into the vacuum we have created to pull in guys we should have already been on the phone with. Firing him after South Carolina, in retrospect, seems like a circus move. What about it am I supposed to be impressed with? What is scary is Foley saying the candidate must be offensive-minded. When I hear an AD say that, it sounds like "fan service". It sounds like a stunt minor league baseball teams do to bring people into a Wednesday night game. "We promise you lots of offense." Nope. Every time I have been promised offense, we end up with coordinators who have nice resumes, but can not produce on the field. I do not want a guy who is "offensive minded". We're not Fresno State. We don't need fireworks. We need wins. I want a guy who had the mentality to win games. "Cut-throat football coach with a killer instinct" should be a redundant phrase. All head coaches should be cut-throats with a killer instinct. Even a hack coach like Dabo Sweeney would have chucked it into the endzone on the very next play after one of those first-quarter turnovers; even "defensive-minded" coaches like Nick Saban. Muschamp does not have that. He wimped out. He has always coached as if he's just desperately waiting for something to happen. He coaches pensive and scared, but he certainly yells a lot when he's doing it. The front of his polo must be covered in spit and BBQ sauce. He has passed that losing mentality to our players as well. For instance, I always wondered why our teams for the past four seasons have been lacking leadership. Who is the "face of Florida football" ? Hargreaves? Fowler? Any player who announcers before the season is over that he's not coming back is not a leader. All these guys making their announcements are selfish kids demonstrating their immaturity through social media. If there was any real leadership on this team, those guys would have quickly been told to shut up and be team players until the season was over (this includes the bowl game). It's also why we tend to see a lot of great individual efforts without a unifying strategy. What is our identity on offense? In four years, we have had none. We simply have flashes of stuff that works until it gets shut down. We have been constantly rolling the dice, hoping something good happens. That is a clear indication of people who do not know what they are doing. This attitude was pervasive everywhere. A guy who gets 7 defensive backs in one recruiting season and 3 offensive linemen in two full seasons is a guy who can not grasp the bigger picture. I have often speculated that throughout his career Muschamp has felt restrained by his head coaches as a coordinator; and that Florida was his chance to release all his angst. "Hey Boss, could you run the ball for the next two series, you're wearing out the defense." Florida Solution: We became a team that literally only ran the ball and took up the time of possession. It seemed to be our only goal. "Hey Boss, could we get another DB or LB on signing day? All we're getting is WR and OL" Florida Solution: Dedicate signing day to defense, grabbing a high profile QB and calling it a day on that side of the ball. "Hey Boss, by settling down the players with your calm demeanor, you're killing their natural emotions and holding them back." Florida Solution: Letting his players run around like kids, drawing personal fouls and being unable to reign-in their emotions. As for the game itself. It perfectly captured Muschamp. We just threw our athleticism on the field, hoping it was enough that good things would magically happen. It's hard to say we did anything wrong because it has to be "wrong" in context to something else, like a plan. We did not do anything wrong because we did not have a plan to do anything right. I was just hoping the runs up the gut was setting up some big play, but it turns out... the runs to no where were just setting up more runs to no where. "If I were still the head coach he'd be kicked off the team.". Holy God Muschamp, shut your mouth and get on the bus. Stop mouthing off like a child. You did not coach well-disciplined teams. He was a product of your inabilities to control your own team. He was clearly not the only one doing that crap on Saturday. What a big man you are now that you can not do anything about it. In case you didn't notice, our teams have been increasingly known for that kind of behavior on the field. You're only making yourself sound stupid. He just does not freaking get it. And I honestly do not believe he ever will. |
